Tablescapes, Velvet Pumpkins & late fall decor
When I start a tablescape or centerpiece I choose a piece to work as a base or an anchor and build from there. You have to start somewhere right? It might be a tray or a bowl, or just a large object or series of objects. This centerpiece began with a large round shallow bowl that is deep moss green.
My palette is white, silver and brown with green and orange accents. Gather a lot of things that have potential and just start playing with combinations and different looks. You will find that this will create more thoughts and ideas, you will think of other things you have that would work, or maybe from your yard or the grocery.
Don’t overlook your closet either, maybe a scarf or wrap that would work as a table runner or accent…how about a sparkly brooch, something from your jewelry box for an unexpected pop of color or bling. The silver pear garland is from my Christmas decor, purchased several years ago. Try different combinations until you create the one you like.
I found this fabric at Hobby Lobby back in September, and immediately envisioned the silver and brown with white pumpkins and fall decor. The fabric was pricey so I just bought 1 1/2 yards and made a rectangular topper for the center of the table. This would also be pretty as an overlay on a tablecloth.
I began by placing a giant green faux pear in the bowl and then just piling stuff in! I added some pine cones from my yard, some pumpkins and gourds
leaves, Indian corn and a dried artichoke.
I like to make sure there is interest by incorporating a lot of different textures. I have real pumpkins, velvet pumpkins, painted pumpkins and waxed gourds.
The silver pear garland was perfect for tying everything together, and helps to unite the various elements.
I love the way this turned out, the look is bountiful which is appropriate for the Thanksgiving season, yet it is updated and trendy with the silver and velvet pumpkins. You can update your seasonal decor with just a few tweaks. I spray painted the pumpkins silver, bought a little fabric and picked up the velvet pumpkins for 50% off last week at Home Goods. Check your favorite stores often, and especially right before holidays when often stuff goes on sale early.
In the great room I wanted a very UNCLUTTERED look after all the Halloween fun and before all the Christmas decorations come out. A few simple touches and a toned down palette for the month of November will provide calm and will be refreshing before the December hustle and bustle!
I brought in this fox hunt print that usually hangs in the dining room. This originally belonged to my father, William Fox, one of eight children. His oldest brother bought a set of 8 original prints in this series depicting a fox hunt and gave them to each of his siblings. Mine will be inherited by my son and his son, Fox, my namesake. I felt like this very special piece of family treasure would be appropriate for November when we reflect and give thanks for our blessings.
a few velvet pumpkins and some painted birds nests,
some tall candles and an iron turkey on the hearth, and some rusty orange accent pillows. Changing out accent pillows is a great way to instantly change the whole look of a room. I have a closet full of different pillows that I use to keep things seasonal and interesting.
The hurricane with corks and pumpkins that showcased a witch last month now holds a golden candle.
In the bar the witch glasses have been replaced by turkeys, and Halloween has turned into Thanksgiving
A few pilgrims have arrived too!
In the kitchen, it’s all about apples. The touches of silver as well as the mix of natural elements keep the whole theme united throughout the house.

a little seasonal bling in my studio and in some other unexpected places,
A little bowl of potpourri fills small spaces with a spicy scent!

I’ve never paid attention to velvet pumpkins, but this season they have caught my eye again and again. Am I just seeing more of them? In any case, I’m crazy about them and yours are lovely mixed in with other pieces. Oh, love the wine corks and pumpkins!
