Tablescapes, Tulips & Tricycles!

What are you doing for Mother’s Day this year?  Both of my children live within 10 miles so I get to see them often. In hopes I can round everyone up during this busy month of May, I got a head start on my dining room table where we can all gather for a Mother’s Day meal.

The best way not to be disappointed on Mother’s Day is to plan it yourself!

This year it’s all about celebrating CC, our new granddaughter, isn’t she a little cupcake!  We have 2 little grandsons too, Super Boy, 5, and his sidekick, Big E, 1, but after being surrounded by Batman and baseball bats, this year it’s all things girl!

I have had this white metal tricycle sitting lonely in the garage, patiently waiting for me to get an inspiration…

Finally it came to me, a centerpiece for our Mother’s Day table!

Some streamers on the handlebars and a pot of tulips and baby’s breath in the little rear basket, this tricycle is ready for a celebration! A “baby” coconut cake fits just perfectly in the basket on the handle bars.

The sweet little bike is perched on a moss mat with some ribbon streamers on the back basket too.  White paper roses are glued to the ribbon ends.

I only have 4 of these ruffled salmon pink place mats, but I really wanted to use them for this little girl theme so I placed them on the table sides.

Green mats are at the table ends.  Each green napkin was wrapped with a matching rose ribbon.  The end places have a square green charger, a square white dinner plate, a pewter salad plate and a pink or white blossom bowl.  A Waterford water glass sits on a silver rimmed bread & butter plate borrowed from my fine china.  The pink blossom bowl is at my place and HH gets the white one.  I often make the table heads different and a little extra special for the hosts. {In this case moi!}

The side places have a pink rimmed dinner plate, a pewter salad plate and a frosted pink compote and goblet.  If you stay within your color palette, it is possible to set an elegant table even if you don’t have complete sets of things. I kept things harmonious by unifying the place settings with the same napkins, ribbon ties, silverware, and mixing the soft pinks and greens with white.

Try not to cock your head when you look at this picture, everything is straight except my camera when I took it!

I kept things harmonious over on the side table too, you don’t want to ruin the whole mood of your room by having something on display that fights with your tablescape!  Even if you have to stash stuff in a box under your bed, de-clutter for your occasion!  Even if it’s just family, when you go that extra step it will elevate your meal from the everyday to special.  Your children might not tell you, but they will notice! Even when mine were little, they appreciated dining room dinners and their manners automatically improved as well as their social skills.

Can’t you just picture a child peddling a tricycle like crazy, bobbing along furiously with the streamers blowing in the wind?

These parrot tulips and calla lilies are arranged in a glass measuring cup that is set down into the painted terra cotta pot

and then baby’s breath is tucked into the gap to make the arrangement look like it is planted

Can you see the ruffled edges of the parrot tulips? They are so adorable and sweet

This is a few days later when they are fully open.  Look for them when you buy flowers, they are show stoppers.

The “baby” coconut cake is from Whole Foods bakery and I topped it with a tulip leaf and a spring of baby’s breath.

What an absolutely joyful table with so many things to like I don’t know where to begin. The tricycle is sheer delight and I love the coconut cake in the basket. I’d like the cake, too, as coconut is one of my favorites. How lucky you are to have everyone close enough to gather round your table. The same was true for us until recently when one of my daughters moved away.

  2. Aha!!! So I can get a little coconut cake from Whole Foods??? I am going to phone them TODAY! I LOVE coconut cake, but no one else in my family does. I like it with the big freshly SHAVED coconut (NOT shredded) like on this one, and a tiny one would be just enough for me!!! I am SO gonna call them today!!!

This is a sweet tablescape! The tricycle is such a great centerpiece tool from which to build! LOVE the streamers! That’s a great touch! Your flowers look so pretty…love those parrot tulips!

Thank you for reminding folks to remove all the peripheral clutter from the room for special dinners. It really DOES make a difference. And aren’t guests – even if they are “just family” – worth that extra effort? Good post, Jenna! Have a happy May Day!

  3. Great tablescape!! And CC is just about the cutest little girl!! 🙂

What a happy table! I like how you had the moss mat on a slant, and the bicycle idea is whimsical and fun. The ribbon streamers look lovely trailing across the length of the table. You have great ideas! Your granddaughter is adorable, too. 🙂

Jenna~ LOVE the tricycle as a centerpiece for your Mother’s Day table! So creative, it won’t be long before adorable CC will be pedaling her own pink version I’m sure! The streamers are the perfect touch trailing the trike on the table… well maybe the “baby” coconut cake is more perfect 🙂 Wishing you an early Happy Mother’s Day!

Just darling! I love the centerpieces, and the tale is def pretty and so feminine!
We have 5 gsons and 1 gdau, so I hear you on the bats and balls!
Your advice about planning it yourself is so true! But I gave up as I was tired of doing it for everyone, and didn’t get to enjoy it. Now I let them take me out!

Thanks for sharing this oh so pretty table, and your sweet gdau!

  18. Botanic Bleu says:

Beautiful! Yes, I can see a child peddling furiously with streamers flying behind. What a wonderful vision you planted in my mind. I love your rosy floral dining chairs with the rolled back and welting. It’s time for me to recover my similarly styled chairs, so I’m really looking at chairs in all blogland. I like yours best of all.

Oh, yes,in a different post, I spotted your curved top wooden paneled doors….envy, envy ,envy…
(Okay, I’m saying a little prayer right now to remind me not to envy or covet.)

    Judith

    • Thank you so much for your sweet comments Judith! I have had these chairs for years and have really enjoyed them, I often use them at the foyer table also, I love this style chair for dining as they are super comfortable…good luck on your chairs! Jenna
