Party Panache, Derby Day

Are you going to watch the great “Run for the Roses” tomorrow?

The Kentucky Derby takes place on the first Saturday in May.  It is also known as the “Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” and will air on NBC starting at 5 pm ET. The actual race is scheduled to start at 6:24pm ET.  Be sure to tune in early for the pre-race hype and to place some friendly bets.

The Kentucky Derby is famous for the ladies donning extravagant hats and the entire event is steeped in Southern tradition or more accurately Mint Juleps!  We always gather a group to watch the race and serve some Kentucky inspired dishes~It’s lots of fun, grab your honey or some friends and watch the festivities!

To inspire your party, here are some of our favorite Southern dishes, just click on the recipe name to see more info and instructions.

The star of course is Chocolate Pecan Pie, also known as Derby Pie, which is traditionally made with chocolate, pecans and

Kentucky bourbon of course!

I like to start the festivities with a few appetizers, such as cheddar cheese and chive filled Winning Cocktail Cupcakes

and Racy Roasted Tomato  White Pizza Dip~ Pretend the tomatoes are rose petals!

You can’t get much more Southern than  Daily Double  Bacon Jam

with Bleu Cheese Biscuits,  there will be a flurry of pounding hooves to get to these appetizers for sure!

For the main course we will of course have Kentucky Bourbon Burgers and

Savory Southern  Grits & Greens Pie  full of bacon, collard greens and grits… a win, place and show all in one dish!

For dessert there will be the traditional Kentucky Derby Chocolate Pecan Pie

These are the horses running this year, they always have such crazy names:

Orb, Verranzo, Goldencents, Java’s War, Overanalyze, Revolutionary, Lines of Battle, Vyjack, Will Take Charge, Itsmyluckyday, Black Onyx, Palace Malice, Normandy Invasion, Frac Daddy, Mylute, Oxbow, Falling Sky, Charming Kitten, Golden Soul, Fear the Kitten and Giant Finish.

Last year I picked “I’ll Have Another”, and he won!!!    I don’t pay attention to the odds and all that technical stuff, I choose strictly by the name.  My pick this year is Palace Malice…..just because I think that name is hilarious….Do you have a favorite, an intuition…? Which name speaks to you?
