Tablescapes, Birthday Party

May is full of birthdays in our family and I wanted to celebrate them all by setting a fun table in honor of my grandsons, my sister, my brother in law,  my niece and goddaughter.

Birthdays are all about CAKE right?

and PRESENTS!

Yep! That’s what I think too!

This puzzle cake appears at every family birthday, it has been a tradition around here since my kids were Super Boy’s age.  I used this wooden cake and the silver wrapped gifts in January for my MILs birthday, A January Birthday with a Sweetheart Cake.

Normally I’m not good at finding bargains but I did find these pink straw mats at CTS last summer for $.50 and I love them, use them all the time!

I added some bud vases with garden roses tucked in between the faux gifts

the base of the centerpiece is a cake stand turned upside down

and topped with a wooden charger

the gifts hide the legs so the white cake stand looks like a tray

The ceramic cupcake dishes are in 4 different designs with a coordinating square plate.  I can tuck some surprises inside for party favors. I bought this set a few years ago on Overstock.com

I pulled out these silver chair place card holders and decorated them with a cupcake paper folded in half.

I have been experimenting with painting silver trays and this one happened to be the right color palette so it found a place on the table

You can see the piece before on the far right in the above photo.  I recently went through my old silver and sold some things to a silver dealer.  He wasn’t interested in these pieces because they are just silver plated and not worth much.  I decided to liven this old bread tray up a little…what do you think?  I felt terrible painting this pretty piece, but I love it now! I will probably paint some of these other ones too, better to re-use than being wrapped away in a closet!

Do you like painted silver pieces? I just used my regular glossy acrylic paint.

Thanks for helping me celebrate all of my May birthdays!

I must confess, this is a fantasy tablescape.  My sister, brother in law, niece and goddaughter all live in California so they can’t be here… Super Boy and Big E are coming over for cake and presents but will NOT be sitting at this table, they are not the neatest of eaters! They will be in the kitchen in a high chair and on a counter stool with child friendly dishes!

The polka dot painted glassware, silver tray and cake painting are my own creations, you can see more at JMdesignsGallery

I love the effort you make for your family even if it is a fantasy. There’s a little fun here for everybody. I see some familiar pieces in your silver plated rejects. I never thought to try and paint them, and even if I did it would look as spectacular as yours.

  6. Never, ever, ever in a billion years would I have thought you could paint over silverplate!!! I had NO idea! Jenna!!!! This is fantastic! What a great idea! You did a beautiful job with the bread tray, and I know you’re going to rock your talent with all the rest of that stuff!!! If you don’t use it in its current state, I see no reason not to paint it and get lots of future use! Wow!!!!!!!! You really have a great talent there!

I remember the puzzle cake from earlier this year! Fun!!!

  7. This is definitely delightful, Jenna! The colors and ingredients are fabulous.

  13. OMG, what a surprise……I have that same puzzle cake from when my kids were little!!! I’ve never seen another one before!!! I got it from a Lillian Vernon catalog for my daughter when she turned 8, and we used it many times!!

    • Ha! I have been desperately trying to remember where I got it! Lillian Vernon, of course! Back in the days when you didn’t get a zillion catalogs, I remember how much I enjoyed that one and would “treat” myself to something every so often. We have had more fun with that crazy little cake, do you still use yours? Thanks so much for commenting, next time I use it I can tell this story!

Jenna~ How much fun is this! The puzzle cake is too darn cute and your use of the cupcake wrappers as place cards and the stand upside down is genius! LOVE your painted bread tray!! You should post a tutorial on painting silver! Wouldn’t it be fun to paint a silver tea or coffee pot? I don’t have the patience or mad painting skills, but what fun to repurpose and bring new life to a discarded piece!

    • Thanks Mary, I have been thinking about doing a post on painting silver pieces but wasn’t sure how people would like it. I’ve had lots of positive comments so I probably will experiment a little further! Thanks so much for the suggestion, I do have a silver pitcher that I have set aside…
      Jenna

  15. Kitty says:
