Creations, Fancy Flatware

Setting fun and unique tables, “tablescaping” is one of my very favorite pastimes.  I don’t have warehouses full of china, linens and glassware to draw from and I have limited flatware choices so I have to get creative to keep things interesting.  The idea of embellishing plain flatware has been rattling around in my head for a while

I have a bunch of these forks that I bought at Target several years ago when HH was complaining that we never had enough forks

I think they were $1 each, and had a nice plain, big, manly handle.  He hates them! I give up! So I knew he wouldn’t care when I borrowed a few…

a little wire to finish the look

This is 24 gauge white wire, very easy to work with, thin and light

After letting the glue dry for 24 hours I began to add wire starting by wrapping the space just above the shell 3 or 4 times, tightly, leaving a couple of inches free for finishing at the end

Then I laid the wire diagonally across the next stone and repeated the wrapping above it, wrapping the stem 3 times, and repeating this to the top

After wrapping the wire 3 times above the top stone, I worked my way back down to the bottom, crossing the stones in the opposite direction

Once back to the bottom I wrapped the wire above the shell 2 more times and twisted it with the starting end on the handle back and tucked the wire ends under the wrapping.  Secure with a dot of glue if you like but I was able to get it very secure without glue.  This wire is thin enough so you won’t have sharp edges.

HHjr said, you’re making that just for photos right? We’re not going to eat with it?

  1. Well now, that is a nifty idea! Thanks so much for the howto, Jenna.

  2. Jenna….Jenna…what a talented lady you are. I have bushels and bushels of shells, never know what to do with them all. Must try this!

  3. These will be so perfect in one of your very pretty tablescapes, Jenna! 🙂

Jenna~ Your flatware is wonderful! I love the shells with the flat marbles, the wire completes them, they look just like some I’ve seen for sale only yours are better & more affordable! Love your charger too, I’m assuming that’s a creation we can look forward to seeing on a seaside table 🙂

  5. Sarah says:

Certainly hope to see these in a tablescape soon. You are very clever! I’ve bought some serving pieces made like this with stones rather than shells. Great job!

  6. lulu says:

Jenna, this is genius! thank you so much for the inspiration. Think I’ll go to Goodwill tomorrow to seeif I can find some flatware with which to experiment.

    • This is very creative idea. So clever and economical. I am sure all your girl friends will be happy to use your embellished flatware and they will be so impressed.

Delighted to meet you and that you and I are from Alabama. I bet we have some common friends. I am coming back and peruse your back posts later. I have to rush off now.

  7. Oh my, I think these are cute and adorable! Visiting from StoneGable linky party.

  8. Barbara F. says:

Hi Jenna, weeding, planting, potting, deep cleaning, emptying and organizing closets…..the list is endless. I just felt pulled with doing a post or two each week, so I need to let life take first place and get things done. I will be back the end of June, I may even have a short post before then.

I love the sea shells on the flatware. And the roping effect. I have been looking for a fishnet to drape over a mirror and add shells, for a vignette for summer in my entryway. So far haven’t found anything. xo

    • Judith says:

Barbara, check out Michael’s or Hobby Lobby for the fishnet; they would be in the Party Section; because it’s Summer they are featuring Luau(s) and I’ve seen nets along with the shells, etc. Both companies also carry packaged shells and sometimes larger loose shells. Some plant/ nurseries also sell nets (people drape them over their ponds to catch leaves and drape over/around their fig trees to keep birds from eating fruit.) If all fails, check your local sports store (Academy, etc) they should have nets in the Fishing Department.

  9. What a brilliant idea! I’ve made my own plate chargers but this never crossed my mind! Thanks for sharing!

  10. How cute! I wouldn’t have guessed these were DIY. They look great.

  11. I love these! How perfect for a coastal tablescape. Thanks again for joining the Open House party.
    Hugs,
    Sherry
