Creations, Burlap Candy Corn Mats and Easy Candy Cookies

Visions of candy corn have been dancing in my head!  All of a sudden I am crazy over the stuff~nnnnnoooo, not to eat, but to decorate with…

This idea just lept into my head the other night…candy corn burlap place mats

The hardest part of this project was designing the layout for easy spray painting

But I did the hard work for you and if you decide to try this, it will be easy peasy

DSC_1702

A piece of white burlap, 2′ high x 3′ wide will yield 4 burlap candy corns, about 13″ x 24″.  Section the burlap horizontally into 3, eight inch sections using masking tape

DSC_1701

Then mark the burlap on each long edge, 13″-14″ There will be 2 upside down, so offset the point markings on each side with this in mind.  It helps to draw it on a piece of paper if you get confused.

Tape paper over the top and bottom sections, securing with masking tape or painters tape

DSC_1705

Spray the middle section orange and let dry

DSC_1707

This is where is gets a little tricky~ the 4 candy corns are in a row, every other one is upside down. Tape off the white points of the right side up candy corns framing the yellow sections of the upside down ones.  Make sure you cover the middle orange section too.

Once you have the white points and the orange mid sections securely taped down, spray the yellow sections

I know this looks like a hot mess…

But it worked!  {Oh,and don’t spray paint your bricks like I did!  Shhhhh! luckily I had some gray paint and did a quick touch up….HH will never know~}

Now all you have to do is cut them apart and trim excess white off the end ones

and you have 4 lovely giant pieces of candy corn!

I have lots of plans for these, they will keep showing up in unexpected places!  You must be hungry after all that spray painting, would you care for some candy corn or maybe a cookie?

The cookies pictured above have been all over Pinterest so I decided to make them for last weekend’s football game party. These 4 ingredient cookies are a quick to make treat, and to me they are sort of like a chewy shortbread and not overly sweet.

There are lots of different pins of the same recipe, so I don’t know where it originated, but I pinned mine from Chef in Training~it’s not quite as good as a homemade cookie, but you can’t beat it for easy!  One of my friends, who is an eat dessert first kind of gal, declared them delicious!

Have you seen the candy corn oreos?  I really like these!  But it might be my current candy corn obsession~

Super Boy asked, “Is that real candy Gigi?”

“Yes, ” I answered, “but it doesn’t taste good, I just use it for decorating…….”

“It tastes sort of like wax,” said HHjr

Super Boy didn’t look convinced at all~

“Would you like to try a piece?” I asked

Picture a vigorously nodding head~

“Yummmmmmmm! I love it!” he declared

“What, candy corn?” asks HH, coming around the corner, “that is my favorite!”

Just goes to show that everybody has different tastes and opinions!

So just in case you don’t like candy corn, here’s the recipe for the cookies:

ROLO CAKE MIX COOKIES

Easy prep with a cake mix and Rolo candies
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 35 minutes
Course Dessert, Snack
Cuisine American

Ingredients

  • 1 regular size box of vanilla or yellow cake mix
  • 1 5 oz can evaporated milk
  • 1/4 cup butter melted
  • 40-50 Rolo candies
  • 1 cup butterscotch chips optional

Instructions

  • Combine cake mix with butter and milk and beat to combine.
  • Divide in half and put half of batter into a greased 9 x 13 baking dish. The batter is sticky so use the back of a spoon and try to spread it out. Bake at 350 for 9 minutes.
  • Cut Rolos in half and place caramel side down on top of baked layer.
  • Drop the other half of batter by spoonfuls over Rolos.
  • Return to oven and bake 20-24 minutes more, until just golden, do not over bake. Top with butterscotch chips if desired. Let cool and cut into bars or squares.

Try to find the snack size Rolos, the are wrapped 3 to a roll so they are easier to undo and you can slice them 3 at a time.

The more the merrier!

They’re not very pretty so I tried to jazz them up with some sparkling sugar!  I really wanted to top them with butterscotch chips hot out of the oven but I didn’t have any~next time for sure!

Which would you prefer, some candy corn or a Rolo cake mix cookie?

Jenna, You are a baking and creating machine! I haven’t had enough coffee this morning to follow your candy corn mat directions, I’ll have to come back when my brain is more in gear, cute & fun! Consider me in the decorate with candy corn camp rather eat it camp, unless it’s an Oreo version 🙂

  2. Cute and yummy, Jenna!

Stopping over from DIY Vintage Chic. — Cute mat idea. And kudos on figuring out how to spray paint that – I don’t think I could have figured that one out. As far as the cake mix cookie goes, I’m totally a Rolo fan. Chocolate and caramel; can’t touch it.

If you’re interested, I’d love if you shared this at my Show & Tell party going on right now. http://www.gingerlymade.com/2013/09/show-tell-45.html

Very clever! They could be strung up as a banner too. I bought some candy corn last week – “supposedly” to only “decorate” with since I didn’t think I liked these. Well, fill a bowl with the extras and grab a handful every time you walk past it – and soon you’re a fan. Happened to me. Probably would happen to anybody!

  17. How smart are you figuring out how to paint it like that!

  18. I’m glad you figured this out, because I never would have.

Such a cute banner — and such a feat of mathematics, measuring and crafting. (And painting the bricks TOTALLY sounds like something I would do.)

    Great job.
