You knew there had to be a burlap turkey, after ghosts, and witches and owls and pumpkins oh my~
I started out with a pile of colored felt with all intentions of creating a felt creature…
But there were a few pieces of burlap in my felt basket, and before I knew it
Burlap was taking over
After making his “body” by folding a 12″ x 7″ fringed edge piece in half and tying the top I took a length of burlap ribbon and tied it over the body top forming a head
An orange triangle forms his beak
and his neck thingy
cut free hand from red felt and tacked on with a glue gun
Then I made a loop higher than his head and tied that with a piece of twine under his neck. This is where the top of the wine bottle will go, inserted in the burlap loop behind his head, and then his head and body will be on the bottle front.
I cut two short pieces of 5″ wide burlap ribbon, about 7″ long and cut into strips 3/4 of the length to form his “feathers”
I tied one on each side of the center burlap ribbon loop behind his head. Do this on the wine bottle and tie it just loose enough so you can slip it on and off the bottle neck. The twine should hold everything together but use dots of glue here and there if necessary.
Add a pilgrim black felt hat with a buckle
And this little turkey is ready to trot! I’m not quite sure how I’m going to do my table yet, just getting started…
Mirror mirror on the wall will you please display my pumpkins this fall?
I might use him in the centerpiece for Thanksgiving dinner so I perched him on a decorative painted wine bottle, but you can put him on a bottle you plan to open or on a gift bottle, and the label of the wine will show which is fun.
He can be used as a napkin ring too~just slip your napkin through the sides of his body!
I left all the twine tie ends long so they look like part of the feathers and I didn’t have to bother hiding them
It is hard to photo while holding and tying, and I realize the directions aren’t crystal clear~ my favorite thing about using burlap is that it looks pretty great without too much fuss~
I think I am going to have to make some more…
It would be fun to have a table full!
Which way do you like better, the bottle topper or the napkin ring?
Thanks for visiting today!
