Creations, Weathered Flower Pot
This wacky winter has everyone on edge, so when our temperatures climbed into the 60s recently, naturally the first thing that popped into my head was, “I’ve got to spray paint something!!”
The only thing I could find was an old terra cotta flower pot in the garage
In my wild excitement I forgot to take a photo before I went to the next step, but I just gave it a very light coat of white spray paint, purposely letting the terra cotta show through.
Then I brushed some ASCP, [Annie Sloan chalk paint] “Old White” over the dry spray paint. Old white is a creamy white, so on top of the bright white spray paint, it gave the pot some depth of color. I used a very dry brush, with light strokes. You don’t have to use chalk paint, you can use any paint, the key here is to lightly load your brush and then brush it back and forth on a rag until the bristles are somewhat dry. The result is a white base, covered with a light creamier white, still letting the original pot show through, which gives it the weathered, “worn over time” look.
I use a lazy susan when I paint glassware and it’s makes adding a checked border to this pot so simple. If you don’t have a lazy susan a square of cardboard would work too, just place the pot in the center and slowly turn the lazy susan or cardboard as you add the checks.
Invert the pot and with a square tip brush add checks, and spinning the lazy susan slowly or turn the pot by hand, trying to evenly space your checks. It doesn’t have to be perfect, don’t stress about it, once it’s done it won’t matter
For the second row place the strokes in between the squares of the first row
For the third row I added checks with a very dry brush so they would look faded and worn
Then I added a row of checks on the top edge of the rim.
I knew I wanted to use this for the Chef’s Table centerpiece, but I wanted to leave my options open after that~

It’s so cool to me how you can just pick up a couple of paint brushes and go all la-dee-da on things to make them look so great!!! That is NOT a talent I possess but wish to high heaven I did. I would love to have any one of these!!! If I had to pick a favorite, though, I guess it would be the bird one…or the parsley one…or……!!! 😉
