The term “high cotton” comes from the pre-Civil War era when tall cotton meant that the cotton crop was good and the market prices were high. It became a general term for success and wealth…
Last Christmas when I saw a tree decorated with faux cotton garlands
I got weak in the knees it was so fabulous
It was decorated with other natural elements and was simply stunning
I wasn’t quite as weak after I found out the price~$40 for 6′ and the tree must have had 6-8 garlands on it
I walked away, sad, but proud of myself…
DD actually saw it in the same gift shop and wanted to buy some for me, knowing I would love it, but she too fainted at the price tag walked away
It was still on my mind after Christmas, so just for fun I googled it to see if I could find it anywhere else
Happy New Year! Grandin Road had the exact garland on clearance for $10!
So I bought 3, you know being such a bargain and all! Now I was in “high cotton!”
One garland made a wonderful loose, natural wreath
and two made this “High Cotton” Tree~
You could use a tomato cage, any garden stand item, or cone shaped object to wrap ANY garland around to make a tree. I have seen beautiful garlands of hydrangeas and mixed florals at craft stores that would make wonderful “trees”
I was able to attach the wired garland to the metal garden frame here and there, just by bending the stems around parts of the cage, or you can use small gauge wire to secure it in place.
It just fits under the chandy!
Thanks so much for dropping by~I so appreciate your visits

This is gorgeous! Guess I will wait, however, for another sale. I like both pieces a lot.
I love both the tree and the wreath. The wreath is perfect on your mantel with the frame and bunny. You did such a nice job. I love it when you find a fabulous sale!
Love your cotton garland Jenna and it’s so fun wrapped around your topiary form! There’s a restaurant in Charleston where we usually have Sunday brunch named High Cotton 🙂
So glad you found the garlands on sale. I love your wreath and tree. Thanks for all the tips.
Well, I love both of them, Jenna. I’m glad to learn that it is not real cotton. I kept trying to figure out how I would make the cotton stems bend like that. I would love to get some of this garland at the price. I’ll be on the lookout. laurie
Look like the real thing. Would love to find some of that at a bargain price.
Love the wreath.

Your cotton tree is gorgeous! What a great cotton find at $10 each. I love how your wreath looks, especially with Mr. Bunny. Sometimes it’s amazing how something so easy can add so much charm! 🙂 I hope you have a great week – hopefully with nice, warm, Springy weather.

I adore cotton boles!! My favorite wreath of all time is my cotton bole wreath.
I wouldn’t never thought of making a cotton tree. Clever!
