Tablescapes, Mixing Old and New
Cuisine Kathleen issued a tablescape challenge using wedding china. She said it didn’t have to be our wedding china, and even said it could be some that you inherited or even recently bought for yourself…
Originally I was going to use all traditional things, a white tablecloth, my white wedding china, traditional candlesticks and silverware…yawn…
This is “Moon Glow” by Franciscan. The edge has an embossed pattern that looks like pineapples. I was a 20 year old, clueless, bride to be and knew nothing about picking out china patterns. My mother said I should pick out something plain so I could use it for a long time. She told me that pineapples represented hospitality, and suggested this china. She was so smart, I still love and use this china for all the big occasions.
But when I started to set my table something happened…
First there was this table runner that I made for my darling daughter…
I really wanted to play with it before I gave it to her for Mother’s Day…
Then there were these plates…
They literally hopped in my cart at Hobby Lobby and refused to get out
and I did have those gray and yellow napkins from the Curious Bunnies tablescape
Let’s just see how they look with DD’s table runner
Wow, I was loving the polka dots and the pattern mix
Before I knew it, I was adding and subtracting and using my traditional wedding things in a whole new modern way
I borrowed some things from the kitchen island vignette
I tucked a small painting inside the wire cage and flanked it with some roses HH gave me for Mother’s Day
The platter from my wedding china forms a base for the centerpiece
I used my wedding Waterford water goblets, my wedding silverware, “Medici” by Gorham, and my great grandmother’s silver chalices
I used “Moon Glow” cup and saucers, with silver wire orbs, on top of each plate
I added a wine trivet, a memento from DD’s wedding and some salad servers I bought when we were picking out her wedding things~
Yes, this is much more me!

Jenna, I love how you folded and used the runner for a table for two, I’m going to borrow that idea! Your marriage of old and new pieces with your wedding china makes a wonderful modern and updated table. My wedding china is a pattern I love but not something I would choose again if I had to do it over again. I’m glad dishes are a lot more affordable these days! I didn’t see those plates at Hobby Lobby, how fun 🙂

Wow…this is my wedding china too. I was clueless and just thought it was pretty. Unfortunately, only a few pieces remain somewhere…we’ve moved so many times! The last move was from Seattle to Nashville TN and now I’m going to look for that china. Thanks for the reminder! Cheryl Ann

Who the heck knows what we want when we are 20 years old, let alone 18, as I was (the first go round)? My mother and the bridal consultant chose my stuff, and I have only recently begun to even like the everyday stuff to the point that I started filling it in on eBay. You are the master of creativity, so I need to go look at mine again, and see if there is one more clever thing I can do for that old ivory and platinum Lenox bridal china.
Jenna, you know I could use your runner and modernize my china! I like your unique fold idea too! I was smiling all the way down your post. Of course, when you said you made the runner for your daughter my thought was, she sews too!!!! Is there anything you can’t do? Seriously, you have so many creative thoughts and what’s more you act on them. I love how you paired the old and new and added the zing of color with your roses. Truly, everything you do has that happy feel and I like it.

Jenna, I love your table runner idea! We always have tables for two now, and this is a great idea for a setting on our small round table. The wonderful thing about white china is that it can go with everything! Beautiful setting. Watch out for those dishes with a mind of their own! I love how you used your old with the new here, and I really love the way you folded that runner. Maybe I’m the most clueless person around, but I have never seen one folded like that. With just the two of us home these days, I need creative settings for two. This is wonderful. I’ll be looking for runners now.

Doing the happy dance for the mix of polka dots and chevron!!! You did really well with the pattern mix. I guess I’d be crazy not to know you would! An “artiste” like you just has that knack.
I really like the “pineapple” china. I would use that for a tropical beach wedding dinner or something crazy like that! So pretty! And pristine! It’s good, though, that you went with what you were feeling. Too many times we try to force it, and that never yields anything we can truly love.

I do love yellow and grey and those plates from Hobby Lobby. Coming from the west coast I have only recently heard of Hobby Lobby as they have made the news. It sure seems like it would be my kind of store.

This is amazing. Great way to mix old and new, traditional and trendy. I especially liked the way you made a large table cozy for two and will use this idea for my big table.
