Holidays, Happy Labor Day!

Happy Labor Day!

DSC_0037

Everyone seems to feel that summer went too fast this year…

it always goes too fast for me, but this summer, I captured some moments to remember, with my camera

Ono flood

Summer started on shaky ground after a 22″ rain left our island flooded

DSC_0018

Once the water receded, we needed a little boat lift repair.  See the guy on top of the pole? And Mr. Universe himself down in the water? They could climb up and down that lift so fast, I called them”the hunky monkies”  😉

DSC_0041

This charter boat goes by every morning and evening, taking tourists for some fishing fun

DSC_0014

And dolphin cruise boats are constant

DSC_0208

We see dolphin daily, and sometimes they even put on a little show, jumping and playing, but this is the best photo I’ve gotten so far

DSC_0028

A lot of fishing goes on around here

DSC_0083

And all kinds of boating

DSC_0070

jet skis, pontoon boats with slides

DSC_0217

And this is “Lil Toot”, the smallest and cutest tug boat you’ve ever seen!

DSC_0002

Football season is year round here

DSC_0135

There is an abundance

DSC_0124

of Tide Pride!

DSC_0077

DSC_0156

The marine police try to keep things calm

DSC_0024

but a lot of boaters insist on standing up and dancing

DSC_0027

Holiday weekends get pretty nuts!

DSC_0015

This is Robinson Island, aka “Party Island”,  a small,  uninhabited island near the pass to the Gulf of Mexico, where everyone gathers and hangs out on weekends

DSC_0191

Sometimes it’s 10 boats deep

DSC_0185

This group found a sand bar to relax on, …

DSC_0202

Talk about grillin’ and chillin,’ that black thing is a grill that they are about to light!

DSC_0024

We said goodbye to our old boat, the Holy Tara Two [the original Holy Tara washed away in Hurricane Ivan]

DSC_0026

We broke in a new boat, the Holy Tara 3 [waiting for name decal]

photo 3

We had a great family reunion

DSC_0065

We taught our California cousins how to fish and catch crabs, and we fed them with Southern favorites, like  LA Shrimp Boil, Baked Cheese Grits and Tomato Pie

DSC_0110

Boats range in size and type on these waters, you will see everything from a yacht to

DSC_0585

the tiki top!

DSC_0030

and a lot in between!

DSC_0086

Lots have crazy names and wild graphics~

DSC_0042

Double Vision makes everyone sea sick

DSC_0101

But we love “Salt water Mafia!”

DSC_0133

These guys in inner tubes were just floating by with a cooler of beer, talking to the boats as they passed…

DSC_0069

Don’t worry, it’s a no wake zone in front of my house

DSC_0207

and they were making plenty of noise to be noticed!

DSC_0055

These guys flagged down 2 girls on a jet ski and asked them to take their picture

DSC_0044

the girls pulled up to the boat and one hopped on and took the shot~

DSC_0059

Big and small, you’ll see it all~

DSC_0023

Parasails are everywhere

DSC_0089

They look so pretty floating over the Gulf

DSC_0074

I didn’t have my zoom on for this shot, but I had to blow it up to show you

DSC_0073

Triple riders sharing a sail!

DSC_0026

Last weekend we headed out through Perdido Pass into the Gulf of Mexico to watch a speed boat race, Thunder on the Gulf

DSC_0031

It was pretty crazy

DSC_0147

and there was a lot of thunder!

DSC_0168

We had “front row” seats

DSC_0169

DSC_0170

Time to head back in

DSC_0186

DSC_0231

DSC_0192

DSC_0195

Everybody does their own thing, nothing too strenuous…

DSC_0196

Back on the porch, we saw the trailers with race boats drive by on their way to the next race

DSC_0204

Yes, sometimes it RAINS

DSC_0026

But the saying around here is, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 15 minutes!”

DSC_1288

Nightfall brings another type of fishermen

DSC_0022

They have BRIGHT headlamps on their boats as they slowly cruise the docks and shore line looking for flounder

DSC_0021

If you look closely you can see a guy with a spear just right of the palm tree, he is just about to “gig” his fish

DSC_9745

After Labor Day, things quiet down and the tourists go back to school and to football games

DSC_0024

And we don’t miss them one little bit 🙂

One thing that surprised me when I was editing my photos was how MANY people were on their cell phones while boating…DISCONNECT every now and then and relaxxxxxxxx…..

I wish you a safe and relaxing Labor Day and I guess now it’s official…

It’s Fall Y’all!

Jenna, your home is in paradise! My family spent time in GS every summer so I feel very much at home when I’m there. I enjoyed each and every pic (you got some amazing shots). Wishing you a wonderful and happy Labor Day!

    • Thanks Emily! It really is paradise to us, when it gets too crazy we just sit on the porch and watch everyone go by~ I hope you had a good Labor Day, and that the temps drop all over Alabama soon!!

  2. Mary says:

Love the parade of boat activity Jenna, it makes for a fun show, especially with the tug, the tubes, and the tiki top! The last few times we’ve been boating on the lake, I’ve left my camera and phone behind 🙂 Our cove is a big raft up area since there is a long shoal. We’ll be happy when Labor Day is over and the summer boaters dry dock theirs for the season 🙂 Wishing you a Happy Labor Day!

  3. Your beautiful photos are making me miss the lake!
    Enjoy the holiday!

  4. Kathleen says:

That was interesting, Jenna. So different from here on Long Island, or at least the East End. You must have warm weather for awhile, no? I guess here we don’t consider it Fall till it gets too cold to go to the beach, more like October. Do you leave or are you year rounders there? We live here all year, September is the best month of the summer!

    • Kathleen says:

And Amen on the cell phone users at the beach! Who wants to hear all their business? If the call is so urgent walk away so the rest of the beach doesn’t have to be disturbed!

    • Thanks Kathleen~ we can swim until mid Oct and it doesn’t get cold until Dec. We go back and forth from Birmingham [4 hours] and I stay a lot in the summer months while the hubs commutes~ September is our favorite month too, as long as the hurricanes stay away!

  5. lulu says:

Wow, with all those boats it must be hard to find water space sometimes. It is amazing all the different vessels that take to the water. We have another five weeks or so to enjoy boating before we put Pipe Dreams away for the winter.

  6. Rosie Moreno says:
