Feelin’ Crabby?

I usually paint crabs blue

with a hint of turquoise, and orange claws

To make these chargers go with my crab plates I reversed the colors and made the crabs orange with just touches of blue

To paint a crab start with a blue swirl, mixing just a touch of royal blue with turquoise

Then top the blue swirl with an orange stroke with 2 humps.  Where the orange covers the blue a new dark is formed which will help give the crab some depth once it’s finished

Now add a swash of light yellow orange thru the center

Next add the “arms,” 2 stacked fat strokes on each side of the body, the strokes closest to the body are larger than the top shorter strokes

Now add 4 short strokes along the bottom for legs and a blue stroke at the top of the arm.  Start the blue stroke at the short orange arm stroke and pull towards center, curving slightly and bringing to a point.  These will be part of the main claws

Finish claws by adding a small pointy blue stroke under the larger claw stroke

Here’s what my palette looks like, turquoise, cobalt, black, orange, yellow orange, yellow and more orange

Black dots add the finishing touches

Use the tip of the brush handle and dip it in paint.  Press down firmly to form dots and make larger dots for the “eyes”

Watch out, he’s ready to crawl away!

I added a row of black dots along the inner edge of the platter for a finishing touch

So next time you’re feelin’ crabby, get out your paint brush and get busy!

Or if you don’t feel like painting you can buy some Crabby napkins here and here

If you want to paint on glass or ceramics, be sure to use paint especially made for glass painting, like Liquitex Glossie Acrylics.  After drying for 24 hours it is baked in the oven to cure so it won’t wash off.  Paint only the areas not used for food, such as the rims, as the paint will scratch off and is not food safe.

  1. I love your crabby creativity Jenna!

The crabs on the platter are so cute! They would be cute on wine glasses too! Thank you for the tutorial. CC’s little beach crab is darling with it’s googly eyes, I will assume it will be pinned to the refrigerator. I am working on an idea for creating crab place mats (amongst many other ideas I am working on that may or may not get done). Have a wonderful weekend….. Candy

Your row of black dots on your chargers really makes your design pop Jenna! Thanks for the tutorial 🙂

  6. Wow! You paint! And sea things! I am speechless. I am also a huge fan of anything at all that has to do with sea life, and am absolutely in love with what you have done here. Painting is not my strong suit, and that is putting it lightly. You make it look so easy, but I’m sure that I could prove you wrong. I love the color combination, the crab itself, the platter, well, just everything!

    • thanks Pattie, you are too funny! My painting style is very loose as you can see, you really can’t mess it up! >

      • I tend to make loose and carefree look stiff and uptight, still, I may try this. The colors are just gorgeous and I’ve been wanting to do a table in this combination. I’m now an email subscriber. I don’t want to miss a thing! 🙂

  7. That is just too darn cute!! Love the bright colors too

These are so dang adorable! I love that you gave a tutorial since I’m artistically challenged. I’d like to include this tutorial in next week features with a link back to you. Hope that’s ok 🙂

Wow, those are adorable. You are so darned talented, Jenna! I think I am somewhat lacking when it comes to anything artistic.
    Have a wonderful week.
