The Organized Life, Prettier Plates & Homemade Olive Oil Spray

With holidays just around the corner we’re all scrambling around getting things in order.  Here are a couple of tricks that might come in handy~

Do you have plates that look like this?  All scratched up?

Forgive me if I sound like an infomercial

You can make them look like new again with Bar Keeper’s Friend.  I got mine at the grocery store.  Look for it with the cleaning supplies.  It’s a thick white liquid that works magic…

And some elbow grease…rub, rub, rub

Here’s another thing you might want to try,

Make your own cooking oil spray with distilled water and olive oil

I use olive oil spray for everything and at $3+ a can, and mystery additives, I decided to try making it myself

The important part is to use boiled, distilled water to sterilize your spray bottle and to make the spray itself.  Bring a quart of water to a rolling boil on the stove or in the microwave and pour it in your bottle.  Make sure your bottle is a sturdy enough  to sustain the heat from the boiled water.  Attach the sprayer and spray the boiled water through it to sterilize that too.

After you’ve sterilized your bottle, boil 1/2 cup, 4 oz.,  distilled water { you can use filtered water } and pour it in your bottle

Add 1 oz olive oil.  Shake to combine

That’s it!

It’s a good idea to add the date, as it only keeps for about a week

Store in a cool dark cabinet or your refrigerator.   Even though the bottle and water has been sterilized, there’s a risk of bacteria developing after a week.   Just make it part of your weekly ritual and toss out leftover spray and make a new batch.  It only takes minutes and you will save $$ and have healthier dishes!

I bought my bottle at the hardware store for $1.99.  Look for one that has a misting spray

Olive Oil Cooking Spray

Servings 5 oz.

Ingredients

  

• 1 quart distilled or filtered water
• 1/2 cup distilled or filtered water
• 1 oz olive oil
• 1 spray bottle

Instructions

 

• Bring 1 quart water to a rolling boil and pour it into your bottle and sprayer. Let sit a minute or so to sterilize the bottle. Next bring 1/2 cup water to a boil and pour into clean bottle. Add olive oil.
• Store bottle in cool, dark place or refrigerator for 1 week. Shake before using

I have used this to spray the inside of my slow cooker and casserole dishes, as well as misting vegetables before roasting and it works like a charm!
