But first I want you to meet Freddy

Our “resident” blue heron

He loves to perch on the boat

And he squawks when we show up to use it

I love to watch him

He does some funny stuff…

He can contort his body into so many shapes

Watch him do his stretching routine

Bird yoga!

Grooming

Scratching

Laughing!

He adopted us when we bought our beach house 30 years ago.   Our kids were babies, and for some reason I can’t remember why we named him Freddy

DSC_0003

He patrols the water’s edge and hunts in the sea oats and shallow water between our pier and the neighbors

DSC_0008

He likes to stroll down the pier too

One day I caught him doing a little sun bathing

He slowly opened his wings

And basked in the warm sunshine

In the 30 years we’ve been coming here, there has always been 1 blue heron.  We have egrets and pelicans and the occasional osprey, but the blue heron seems to have made this his territory

Now, this is not the original Freddy, as the life span of a blue heron is only 15 years

But I’d like to think this is his son or grandson…

He’s kind of like our caretaker…always watching over us, as good Dads do…

What a cute story! I am sure it is Freddy Jr. or Freddy III.

    • Thanks Ellen, I’m hoping to catch Freddy doing more antics this summer- sometimes he comes up to the pool deck and has a drink from the pool, but he’s hard to catch! Have a wonderful Sunday- >

  7. Mary says:

Great photos of Freddy Jenna! We have a resident heron too and I get a kick out of all that neck stretching and Dr. Suess-like tufts of hair when they’re wet 🙂 Congrats to your winner!

  8. Freddy is photogenic! Thanks for introducing us!

  9. Kim says:

Congrats to Valerie! Aren’t God’s creatures so interesting?!? Their habits always intrigue me. We joke about our horses acting like big dogs. They roll around, they jump and play. Your Freddy is wonderful and I’m sure so fun to watch each day. He’s a treasure!

  10. Emily says:

I love that bird, he would make me so happy. I think it is just cool he chose you and your family to make his home with. He looks like he’s in charge out there. Please be considerate when using your boat so you don’t disturb his day 🙂
    Happy Summer Jenna……….

  11. Kitty says:

That was a fun read, Jenna, on your resident blue heron, Freddy. I laughed at the yoga pose!!
    Congratulations to Valerie!!
