Fearless Friday, Rose Garden

I am back in my studio this week, and as much as I have gotten to love watercolor it is such a treat to have plenty of space to work in and paint with my favorite medium, acrylics. I have 2 BIG canvases in the works but first I did a small (12″ x 24″) “warm-up” painting
The inspiration for today’s painting was a flower photo
I cropped it to just show the blooms
Then I painted it with the Waterlogue app
and also tried the Waterlogue Color Bloom effect
I put all three versions together and printed them out for a reference page, upper right below
I often start with a black canvas, it will be mostly painted over, but it adds a subtle drama
If you do an underpainting, in other words, paint your canvas with black or a complimentary color of the main tone of your finished work, before starting, it creates a wonderful effect as your painting comes to life
I prefer to mix all my colors from a limited palette, which really keeps the tones uniform and congenial
I keep a reference color chart handy in my paint storage cabinet {yikes, artists are messy}

You really can mix just about any color you need with red, yellow, blue and white {okay, sometimes I also use a little black}
I started with Hansa yellow light, Naphthol red light, and Cerulean blue
Then I added Cadmium yellow medium, and ultramarine blue to increase my range of greens
First step is laying out the composition by placing the key elements on the canvas
I added a few more roses
then I started adding the foliage
Once the composition was defined I went back and added more color and layers to finish the rose blooms

At this point I decided not to leave the background black, and added thin layers of a creamy white, letting the black peak through for depth

Awesome! I love seeing your progression as you paint. My mom has the most beautiful magnolias she painted on black. Black gives such depth to flowers that you can’t get any other way. (My opinion, which may be wrong. Ha!) Thanks for sharing your process. I might be able to do this if I were sitting right beside you and copying your every move! Happy hump day! 🙂
