Fearless Friday, Lobster Trap Buoys
My new passion is lobster trap buoys
Recently pictured on the cover of Coastal Living magazine, they are so colorful and full of personality
And inside the magazine I discovered the artist Trip Park and his wonderful lobster buoy paintings
I mentioned him the other day when I was doing some Instant Decorating because I am working on a large acrylic canvas inspired by his paintings
I used a photo from another magazine to try buoys in watercolor until I have a chance to get back to my studio
I laid in some background washes first leaving the buoys white
Then gradually built up the color layers
It was really just a quick sketch, to get the feel for the subject
This was a good learning experience, and doing a quick work is a good way to study your subject and warm up for a larger work. The background is too bright, and there are another zillion things I would change…
I’m hoping that I can achieve a more rustic and weathered look in acrylic
I created a Lobster Buoy Pinterest board for reference, and will use elements from many photos for my final painting, so stay tuned…
Painting is kind of like cooking, sometimes you have to tweak the “ingredients” to get the results you like…
