Fearless Friday, Lobster Buoy Love

I haven’t had any time to paint these past few weeks, with house guests and traveling, so today’s painting is one I did a month or so ago, to finish the guest room redo

I did a watercolor of buoys earlier this summer, you can read about the inspiration and see the tutorial here

I wanted to try painting buoys in acrylic too

Here’s my process

Setting up my work space with reference photos, sketches, paint

I use a spray bottle to keep my acrylic paint moist on my palette, you can work for a long time without worries of the paint hardening if you give it a spritz once in a while

You can also put your palette in the refrigerator if you cover it, the paint will stay pliable for a long time.  Brushes too, just put them in a ziplock and you can keep a loaded brush in there for days!

Great for furniture painting and other large projects

I chose gray for the underpainting

Roughly laid in the shapes with white paint

And then applied color, refining the shapes as I went

starting to detail the ropes

Wow, you almost make me feel like I could give this a try! How great that you showed us step by step! Your final paintings are fabulous! What don’t you do?!!!

  2. Nice, very nice! Love your guest bedroom, and the buoys look just like I remember Maine.

Oh Bouy! It turned out great! I love how you took the idea and made it your own. I tried to borrow an idea from another painting I saw and it turned out to be too much like the original. Now I feel like I ripped off the other artist, which wasn’t the plan. The good thing about pain is I can go back and paint over it and try, try again! Thanks for the inspiration to learn from others, but be ourselves!

  9. Jenna, the buoys are perfect in the guest room…love it! Happy weekend!

  10. Being able to see your process was fascinating to me, and because I have always had an almost unnatural fondness for buoys, I absolutely love this painting! It looks beautiful in its new spot!

  11. I love the buoys! Watercolor is so hard…..that’s why I sue oils. I like the blues and yellows in this room. So pretty!!!

  12. Oops! That’s why I *use* oils!
