…………………………………………………….

Okay, let’s have some fun!

A glossy photo, + a simple sketch and layers of color = a colorful bouquet for Cinco de Mayo!

The first thing I learned as an art student was the importance of a sketch book, and using it daily

Even if I can’t paint every day, I try to do a quick sketch or two

Drawing daily improves your skill and the way you “see” things and you will be amazed at how it spurns ideas and gets your creative juices flowing

When drawing I encourage you NOT to sketch with an erasable pencil,

Use a fine liner pen and don’t sweat perfection

If you keep erasing you will never gain the 2 things you need for success, speed and confidence

You can make adjustments when you start to fill in with color

I packed a small travel bag full of everything I need to grab and go so I can sketch anywhere

Whether I’m going on the road or just outside, this 13″ x 13″ tote is a perfect size…big enough to hold the essentials, but small enough to be compact and light

It holds a 6″ x 8″ sketch book, a set of markers and liner pens, and a book or magazine for ideas

Markers are pricey, but I found this set of 40 Ohuhu double tip markers on Amazon for $22 and decided to try them

The reviews said the colors were a little wonky, but that actually appealed to me, I can balance them out with pencils and markers I already have

I made a color chart for reference and everything I need is right at my finger tips

I like to start by building color from lights to darks

At this point I used colored pencils to soften some areas

Colored pencil is effective for blending and softening the intense marker

“Summer in a Jar!”

Art in a tote bag!

Last week I asked if anyone wanted to share their artwork or inspired creations

My very talented fellow artist Johanne Lamarche was kind enough to send me this photo of her fabulous recent work

3′ x 3′ oil painting with cold wax and gold leaf

I know this is even more stunning in person!

You can visit Johanne at French Gardener Dishes, where her recipes and gardening posts are works of art too

Thanks for sharing Johanne, you are fearless!

Beautiful Jenna!!! And thanks for sharing johanne’s amazing piece and sharing her blog.

  2. Mary says:

I love your ‘summer in a jar’ design Jenna and your fun stars & stripes design for celebrating the red, white & blue! I bet there is lots of inspiration in The Forest Feast 🙂 Happy Cinco de Mayo!

  3. Loving your talent Jodi! Plus dong that color chart, for those markers. That’s genius idea so you know exactly which one your using in a bigger way. I love that!

  4. I love seeing your sketch book and lovely art piece! Great fun. Last year I discovered that it was a lot easier to pack up and go if everything was somewhat packed up TO go from the start and since then have been like you — an advocate of having it ready when you are. I like the look of the markers and your color charts. Color charts make me very happy!

  5. thefrenchhutch says:

Jenna, you make it look so easy! You are such a talented artist, wish I had just a pinch of that. I love how organized you are for “on the go” so you have what you need with you. Love your “summer in a jar” and it looks fabulous on the tote. Lovely painting by Johanne. Happy May…….

  6. I always look forward to Fearless Fridays Jenna as I learn so much from you! Love the marker color chart idea. A friend of mine also sketches daily on her commute train ride to a big job, often painting African animals alphabetically backways to develop her skills further. It has led to illustrating and writing childrens’ books and a greeting card business for fun. She too is very organized with her art materials. You both make it look easy. Daily practice is key. Love ‘Summer in a Jar” and seeing how it came to be. The dahlia is stunning. Honored and humbled to have my oil painting featured on your blog. Thanks so much for sharing it Jenna!

    • Thank you for sharing Johanne! It is fabulous!! It’s amazing how much more I draw when I have everything ready at hand. I have seen some of your friend’s awesome work on your blog, incredible, and she does it on the train, wow! Happy painting!

  7. Jenna… you are so talented! Have a wonderful weekend!

  8. Love your work…and I thought for sure they were water colors! Love your technique!

  9. Jenna, Your Summer in a Jar design is wonderful…I just ordered a notebook and hopefully it will inspire me to be fearlessly creative too! Have a great weekend! Linda

  10. Amazing Jenna! How fun to see your process from start to beautiful finish!

  11. Jenna, your summer in a jar is gorgeous! You always inspire me and make me think there might be an artist inside of me!

  12. So jealous of your artistic abilities! I love your “Summer In A Jar”!

  13. Julie says:

Hello Jenna, oh you are so talented at so many things and an artist is one of them! You are inspiring me to buy the pens to sketch with. I do think that this method is a lot more fun and easier than drawing with a pencil. I will have to visit an art store or go on amazon and buy those pens! Thanks for sharing your talent and inspiration with us at C&C with J&J!
Have a nice day and week and a HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY.
    Hugs, Julie xo

  14. Sandra Garth says:

Your reason for not erasing makes perfect sense. I never thought of it that way.
