Fearless Friday, Roses for Mother’s Day!

Roses for Mother’s Day!

This is a special Fearless Friday~

An artist blogger buddy,  Jodi   joined me in a watercolor demonstration to show you how 2 artists can paint the same subject and have 2 different intrepretations, 2 similar, yet very different paintings

I sent her this photo and she painted the stunning impressionistic watercolor below

I really love her fast and loose style!   My bouquet is below right

Her roses seem to be singing and smiling!!  Just like Jodi’s warm, bubbly personality~

Although I consider my style impressionistic too, it’s not as loose and a little shy….sort of like me 😉

Jodi began her process with a little Warm Up, pictured above, which I love just as much as her finished bouquet

This is how my Mother’s Day Roses got started

Because the subject was fairly complicated, with multiple blooms, leaves and colors,

I did a line sketch to help me edit the photo visually, see the shapes, add and subtract for a pleasing compostion and get a feel for the blooms

Next I colored it with pencils to memorize the color variations, so I could paint faster and more freely, without sweating the details

Then I started my usual process by building the shapes with color and layers

Another way to help with a complicated subject is to use filters or photo effects, like the photo below, created with the Waterlogue for iPhone/iPad app

It helps you see the shapes, tones and color variations, and basically simplifies the equation for your composition

Many of Jodi’s unique paintings are available as prints and cards, along with her DIL’s fun vintage signs, in their Etsy Shop here

My version of Mother’s Day Roses is available as an art print and on 19 other different items in my Society6 shop here

Thank you Jodi for helping out today!

Be sure to visit Jodi at the Creative Life In Between here, and get her thoughts on our watercolor roses paintings today

Her photos and recipes are just as stunning as her paintings, and she has an adorable side kick named Charlie  🐾

Have fun and Be Fearless!!

  1. Wow, Jenna, I love your Friday insights into the mind and workings of an artist! The entire process seems so logical when you explain it, yet I would not know where to begin on my own. The line drawing you did to start makes me think you should add a collection of adult coloring books to your repertoire. That’s my idea of doing art and I do love to color! Happy Mother’s Day weekend! Linda

Oh Jenna! What a privilege it was to do this with you. Thank you so much for inviting me to do this with you. I feared my painting was a bit amateurish compared to yours, but you inspire me, and you made me FEARless! You inspire me daily with your many talents, and I think of you as a blogging soul sister! We share so many of the same passions and interests. I hope someday we can get together in person and cook and paint and be fearless together! I love the 1-2-3-4 punch in the title. You are so amazingly creative. This was such an honor to do. Maybe we make it a yearly mother’s day tradition. Happy Mother’s day sweet friend! Hugs from Mars! xo

    • It was tons of fun Jodi! I am always blown away at how much painting you get done every week! You inspire me, and have made me fearless! We must definitely do this again!

  3. Jenna and Jodi, you two are fabulous artists. I love the two different interpretations. Just beautiful! Love, love, love!

  4. Both bouquets are gorgeous, Jenna and Jodi! It is interesting to see your individual process. In the eyes of this beholder, I love both bouquets! Happy Mother’s Day to both of you and thank you for the early bouquet of roses.🥀

I enjoyed seeing the steps you took to complete your painting. What a fun challenge to do with Jodi! Fun to see how you both interpreted them differently. I look forward to seeing more of your art as I’m now following you! 🌹🎨👍

  7. Love to see different interpretations of the same item – It is quite interesting how everyone sees the same thing differently, too – however your styles are very similar (and yours is still my fav tee tee)

This is so interesting! I love seeing the similarities and differences of how you and Jodi do your painting techniques. The roses are beautiful, and I have good news. I ordered a tote for my mom for Mother’s Day from Society 6 (the gorgeous large pink rose bloom, my favorite). I was getting worried when it hadn’t arrived, and I was leaving Friday to visit her over the weekend. We stopped at the mailbox on the way out, and it was there. Hooray! Thanks for the Mother’s Day inspirations with your lovely Society 6 treats. 🙂

  14. Wow how fantastic! I enjoyed both of the versions of the painted roses. I lack the gene for painting so I very much appreciate the talent others possess in this department! I’m not familiar with Society 6- I’ll have to check it out!

  15. Jenna, I am so glad I have such a talented artist as a friend…you inspire! Thanks for linking to Gardens Galore!
