Certain subjects fascinate me and for some reason I have a thing for carrots
Maybe it’s their bright color, funny shape or multiple textures…
They just make me smile
This painted carrot tutorial, demonstrates how easy they are to paint
Today I thought it would be fun to demonstrate how different mediums and styles can create a variety of results from such a simple subject as a carrot

Water color carrots
This is a very fast and loose painting
Quick deliberate strokes with a fairly dry brush loaded with orange and yellow
More layers and beginning tops
Adding greens and final details
Carrots with ink and colored pencil begins with an ink sketch
Adding very light tone to the highlight areas
Building color
Deeper color
Very simple lines give the impression of the leafy tops

Frustrated?! So it’s not only me at times?! Even great artists like you??! 🙂 I think that is what I also love about watercolor! It is so challenging! I think all your versions are wonderful!
ha, you should see the hot mess I painted the other day! I left it outside and it got rained on and actually looked better! I do think watercolor is THE most challenging medium, but that makes it also the most exciting~ I am planning to try again tomorrow, hope you get lots of painting in this weekend Jodi 🙂 >

Colored pencil and ink is my favorite especially with the lime green polka dot background. Who knew carrots could be so fascinating to paint?

I think I will be coming back to this post to remind myself about color layering! It’s so easy to (often accidentally) put too much down at once and boom. A mess. I love all the versions of your carrots, and really appreciate your tips and step-out photos. I might have to try a version myself. I’m pretty bad drawing from life, but it’s something I need to work on. A lot! Thanks for this — bookmarking this one!
sometimes experimenting with other mediums and help me learn more about my preferred medium if that makes any sense at all! The important thing is to just do it! Have fun Jeanie 🙂

Visually, carrots are fresh and fun. I can see why you would enjoy the artistic side of them. Now those recipes, they are calling to me!

Oh, do you ever make this look simple – and I know it’s not!! Someday I will pull out my old pencils and watercolor paints and try again for the millionth time!

Jenna, I would be hard pressed to choose which I like the best. I have heard from my artist friends that water colors are very difficult. It appears you have mastered all the mediums!

I LOVE this post because I, too, love carrots from their sturdy base to their delicate tops. I also love your drawings, and appreciate your showing, step-by-step, just what you do. I’m talking an online course in food illustration, but I’m still not particularly good at it. Still, you are so inspiring!

It’s part of Danny Gregory’s Sletchbook Skool. I started with an Illustrated Map class and loved it, so decided to do the food illustration as well as creative lettering. One of the first exercises in creative lettering was to write with our non-dominant hand. As it turned out, I can write very well with my left hand (I am right-handed), I enjoy it, and it has opened up a whole new creative world for me.
Thanks so much for sharing Pattie, much appreciated! I will check it out. I took a freehand lettering class in college and it was one of the best classes I’ve ever taken. Not only did I learn calligraphy and lettering discipline, we had to do one small drawing a day of anything we wanted…it really pushed the thinking and experimenting side of being creative. Good luck and have fun! I hope you’ll share something sometime on your blog! >

The colored pencil and ink versions are my fave! I also love how you used carrots in a vase that still had their pretty green tops on them. I want to grow carrots specifically to be able to use them in centerpieces. LOL
