Fearless Friday, Fresh Fall Figs

Is is still hot where you are?   😅

It is hot and humid on the Gulf coast, typical for August,  so I have been drawing inside, in the AC

I have been exploring and experimenting with all kinds of art supplies, dusting off some old ones and trying out some new, doing renderings with pen, markers and colored pencils

I select my color palette before I start, so I don’t waste a lot of time looking

I begin with a simple line sketch, using photos or real life for a model

Then I gradually add color, starting with the darkest darks or the lightest lights, or both

Building color as I go

Markers provide the consistent areas of solid color while colored pencils can soften and blend

Fresh fall figs!

My favorite way to enjoy figs is on a flatbread, like this Figgy Bleu Foccacia with Grapes

If fresh figs aren’t available, fig jam is a handy thing to use,  it’s heavenly paired with bacon and blueberries on a thin crust pizza like this Fast & Fabulous Flatbread here

If you would like a framed print of Fresh Figs, it is available here, with 8 different frame options and in 6 different sizes

“Fresh Figs” is also available on 11 other items in my Society 6 shop

“Beach Houses” is available on 21 different items, including art prints and canvas

Art News!

I just ordered the September Box from Art Snax, a monthly art subscription box similar to Sketch Box that I shared a few weeks ago.  Art Snax is a little cheaper, $24 a month with free shipping.  The hook that got me is that everyone that orders the September box automatically gets another box from Liquitex with a new art supply they’ve been developing for years!   Sign up here if you’re up for some art supply excitement!

I am not sponsored by Sketch Box or Art Snax, just sharing info with my fellow artist friends

If you’ve discovered a fantastic new art supply please share in the comments below!

I love your fig renderings Jenna! We always look forward to fig season and have been enjoying a bounty of them from our neighbor’s tree the last few weeks. Your flatbread looks delicious!

  2. Yum, and pretty too! Just plucked my first fig off a neighbor’s plant this past week – warm and juicy!

  3. Those figs look good enough to eat! Love the peach and purple combination to bring out the flesh and the blue highlights on the purple skin.

Yummy figs, what could be better! I love your recipes and art, the artsy figs, gorgeous. My dad had a huge fig tree and make the best fig perserves. I miss getting those jars of yumminess! Lovely post………

  8. It’s definitely not scorching hot like it was all summer here in the Midwest! We have been blessed with some cool, less humid days that I am just gobbling up! I don’t know whether or not you are in the path of that big storm coming. If so, PLEASE take care! Have a good, SAFE weekend.

Still hot here in the Pacific NW! 🌞 Love your colorful beach houses and beautiful figs! The focaccia bread looks heavenly, Jenna! I have never had fresh figs – will have to see if I can find them in the store! 😊

OMG – I can’t decide which I like better – the art – or the flatbread – both are awesome! GREAT ART – I think the art wins 🙂 <3

  14. Wow that is just gorgeous and it’s on a pillow? Ohhh you are making this so hard for me. I am deep in the middle of a huge purge of “stuff”. That pillow is cuter then words!

Your flatbread looks delicious! Your figs are gorgeous and look like I could try this one. Pencils are so much easier to control than paint. 🙂

  16. Your fig painting and everything in this post looks wonderful — including the flatbread. Have to get back with my colored pencils — it’s been a long time!

  17. Sandra Garth says:

I’m pretty sure we’ll be looking at summer in the rear view mirror until next year. One of the best parts of fall around here is fresh figs and I can’t wait! Love the picture and the flatbread.
