Fearless Friday, Leaves of Change
We don’t have the first autumn leaf on the Alabama Gulf Coast, our leaves are of the palm variety…
Why not paint some!
I started with painting an area with clear water and adding color, known as the wet into wet technique
This is the fun side of watercolor, letting the paint do it’s own thing, the colors mix and blend
Autumn leaves are often a rainbow of colors
A few splatters just for fun, and then set aside to dry
While this was drying I got out a set of Watercolor Brush Pens to play with

When I first got them I was not impressed, but I had never really given them a good try
I did a quick leaf sketch, practicing the leaves I wanted to ink on the watercolor painting for finishing
I colored and played and blended with a clear water pen, available here
And happily decided I like these pens after all!
They really do blend like watercolor~ and the handy waterbrush is so convenient, it has a top like a marker, and doesn’t leak
Fill the empty barrel with water, and you are good to go. Simply remove the top and squeeze the body to release water as needed
The waterbrush pen works with watercolor pencils too
Inktense pencils can be used alone or blended with water

All these things are great for watercolors at your fingertips anywhere
You can use a regular watercolor brush and water to blend them also
I keep a handy grab and go art bag nearby at all times
It reminds me to Be fabulous and is just the right size for a variety of supplies
A large sketch book for mixed media, the watercolor pens set, and a carry all pouch all fit nicely inside
The medium Polka Dot Poppies carry all pouch is perfect for markers, pens, pencils, etc.
Everything I need for traveling, whether it’s on the road or just outside or to another room, is ready for action when I can’t set up my regular watercolors
When the traditional watercolor was completely dry I drew leaf shapes over the paint with a Master fine point archival ink pen
And now I have plenty of colorful autumn leaves and you can too!
No raking needed!

Your leaves are just beautiful — and it reminds me to be a little more daring and just let it happen, although I’m not sure my “just let it happen” results could come close to this. I love the happy colors — and it sure is more color than we’re seeing in Michigan this fall!

I love the leaves! I adore the Derwent Inktense watercolor pencils. That’s what I use for my letters and art journaling. I’m too intimidated with watercolor paint! ;P

my husband has gotten me to become a baseball fan, so I’m sure we’ll be watching the Cubs too. Trying to decide where to be this weekend as Nate approaches… You’ve got to try the waterpen with your pencils, it would be a great way to get over your fear! I think you’d like the watercolor brush pens too, because you can control them like pencil or marker

Your painted leaves are lovely. Although we are seeing plenty of fall leaves here in Europe, when we return home to Florida it will be green leaves of the palms like you.
