Holidays, Turkey Topped Pecan Pie

Let’s talk a little turkey…

An easy pie decoration~

And an easy pie!

Have you seen Pecan Pie in a jar?

I have seen it at Trader Joe’s, Williams Sonoma, and it’s available on line at  Amazon here

I took a little liberty and added some chocolate chips

I love Trader Joe’s pie crust too, it’s so buttery and flaky!

Brush the pie crust cookie cut outs with egg

I used black decorating sugar for the pilgrim hat

A mix of yellow and red gel food colors created the orange for Tom turkey

When researching fun facts about Thanksgiving for the Tablescape Hop last week I discovered this:

Ben Franklin wanted the turkey, not the eagle, to be our national bird. Franklin wrote in a letter to his daughter that the eagle had “bad moral character,” and that the turkey was a “much more respectable bird.”

Thomas Jefferson thought a Federal holiday for Thanksgiving was “the most ridiculous idea” ever conceived. It’s been said that Benjamin Franklin named the male turkey “Tom” to spite Thomas because of their differences of opinion about the holiday and the national bird.

Bake the turkeys until they are almost done and add pecan feathers during the last few minutes so they don’t burn

The color kind of does it’s own thing during baking

Gobble Gobble!

If you don’t want to use Pecan Pie in a Jar, here are some tasty alternatives

Oh that pie!!!!!! Gotta find that pecan pie in a jar at TJs! love that you added some chocolate chips to the top. As much as I love to bake, I don’t eat a lot of my own sweets. This pie however – I might eat the whole thing!

  4. I usually make my own crust from scratch, but Trader Joe’s has a good one for emergencies? I’ll check it out! Thanks! And thanks for the background on the holiday and the spat between Jefferson and Franklin. That’s something new to me! Wild!

Cute pie decorations Jenna! I did see the ‘pie in a jar’ at WS. I wish Trader Joe’s would open up closer to me, my shopping cart would be overflowing with more than we could gobble 🙂

  9. This is so cute and clever Jenna! My daughter makes a wonderful pecan pie but I will try the pie in a jar. Have a gorgeous day!

From scratch pie crusts and I don’t have the best relationship so I buy them ready-made. Chocolate Pecan Pie sounds amazing and the turkey cookies are the perfect decoration. I’d probably pick the pecans off the turkey’s tails and have to try and replace them.Thank you for sharing with us this week at Celebrate Your Story, and I hope your week is going great.

  14. Hi there, this would fit perfectly in Food on Friday: November under the American Favorites theme. Hope you bring it on over to share with everybody. Cheers from Carole’s Chatter
