Party Panache, Show Your Colors Cake

If you’ve never tried baking a multi colored cake, you must try, it’s tons of fun

There are lots of different methods, and this is a great short cut version

Prepare a white cake batter from scratch or use a quality white boxed cake mix

Prepare batter as directed if using a box mix, adding an additional egg and what ever else you like to use to doctor it up~ I usually sub butter for the oil and use buttermilk instead of water

Put half of the batter in a well greased and floured bundt pan

Divide the rest of the batter in half or fractions according to how many colors needed.  For this cake I wanted half of it blue, orange and white and half red and white

I left half of the batter white, then used 1/4 of the batter for red, and then divided the remaining 1/4 of batter in half again to tint part orange and part blue

Carefully place the colored batters on top of the white in pan, creating a trough to hold the colored batter in place

For the orange and blue, I put the blue it first, then topped it with the orange.

If you take a knife and drag it through the batter a few times you will get more of a swirl effect on the inside

I did not swirl mine so it produced a “tunnel” of color when cut into

You have to take a leap of faith here, it’s hard to predict or control exactly what the batter will do

I got pretty lucky with the blue and orange, creating an “eye of the tiger”

I made this Alabama-Auburn cake for the Iron Bowl game Thanksgiving weekend.  It’s our biggest rivalry and it was a tough loss for Alabama

We thought our football season was over and but all of a sudden a lot of crazy things happened in the playoff games, and we are back in at #4, playing the Clemson tigers in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day

Clemson’s colors are orange and white so I will make this cake for the Sugar Bowl without the blue this time

We used icing in a can to write Alabama and Auburn

I had some little helpers so it’s a little non perfect, but you get the idea

This is super easy, super quick, and tons of fun to match your cake to the occasion

I have found that gel food colors produce the best color, especially for red

Show Your Colors Cake

Course Dessert
Cuisine American

Ingredients

  • 1 box vanilla or white cake mix {or your favorite homemade cake batter}
  • ingredients listed on box to make cake
  • gel food coloring in colors to match your team or occasion
  • buttercream icing optional
  • decorative icing in a can optional

Instructions

  • Prepare cake batter according to instructions.
  • Place 1/3-1/2 of white batter into a well greased bundt pan.
  • Divide remaining batter into bowls according to number of colors needed.
  • Tint batter to colors wanted.
  • Make a “trough” in white batter with back of spoon and put colored batter into trough as well as possible. Don’t worry if it isn’t exact, it will move around while baking anyway. If you want a tunnel leave batter alone in the trough. If you want a swirled effect, take a knife and run it through the colored batter 3 or 4 times in a swirling motion.
  • Bake cake according to package directions, being careful not to overbake. Remove from oven when just done. Let cake cool completely, turn out of pan and frost or decorate when cooled completely.
