Fearless Friday, Using Line

Happy Ground Hog Day…

I hope the ground hog doesn’t see his shadow today and that Spring is on the way!

I’ve been painting flowers lately, dreaming of Spring

This one began with a loose ink sketch

I choose a focal point to begin,

like the daffodils and blooms on the left in the magazine inspiration photo below,

and build the composition from there

If  you do a pencil sketch first, erase it before you add color

A white gel pen, or a paint pen is handy for corrections

It is visible now because the paper is not pure white, but once color is added it will disappear

Once the composition was established, color washes were added

And from there it magically grew by itself

I used watercolor brush pens, markers, and a 0.4 black fine liner pen

make sure you use an archival {waterproof} liner pen or the ink will bleed

Once I was happy with the colors, I went back and added more lines for details

Here is another floral done in a more modern style,

simple shapes, exaggerated colors and lines

This fast and loose watercolor began with color areas,

and came to life at the end with the addition of a few simple lines

I was about to trash this painting,

the colors were too blaring and it felt stiff,

but I decided to add some lines to define the shapes

This is not a favorite painting, but it was a fun exercise

One last touch can take a creation from bland to grand!

{or at least better}

Be Fearless and experiment!

I am not an artist in your genre, but I love seeing your activity unfold as you do. Happy Fearless Friday!

  3. I love these Jenna and find them inspiring. I recently returned to line sketching/color, which I hadn’t done for ages. It does add some wonderful detail and accent and that’s very clear in your flower paintings. Your shading with the brush markers is really outstanding. I need to focus more on that. This one is a good inspiration piece for me to remember!

    • Thank you Jeanie, I am loving the brush markers. Do you have a water brush? It’s a brush with a water chamber so clear water flows to the brush with a squeeze. You can use it to blend some brands of markers, like Tombow. It’s tons of fun to use and no messy water containers required!

  4. Beautiful Jenna!
