Cuisine American
Servings 18 bars

Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 2 Gala apples peeled, cored and diced
  • 1 1/2 T butter
  • 3 T brown sugar
  • 2 tsp apple pie spice
  • 1 T flour

Bars

  • 1/2 cup {8 T or 1 stick} unsalted butter
  • 1 egg room temperature
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp apple pie spice
  • salted caramel sauce
  • whipped cream

Instructions

Apple Filling

  • Peel, core and chop the apples into 1/2 inch pieces.
  • Melt butter in medium sauce pan over medium heat.  Add brown sugar and stir to melt.
  • Add apples, stir and cover pan.  Let apples cook for 5 minutes.
  • Apples should be soft {or continue cooking until they are} and then add flour.
  • Stir flour into apples until it disappears and filling thickens.  Remove from heat and let cool.

Bars

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Generously grease or spray a small baking dish, 8″ x 8″ or I used a 9″ x 6″ rectangle.
  • Melt butter in a large mixing bowl.  Add sugar and whisk to combine.
  • Add egg and whisk to thoroughly.
  • Add vanilla, baking powder, apple pie spice and flour.  Stir well.
  • Stir in the cooled apple filling.
  • Pour batter into prepared dish and spread into an even layer.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until just set.  Let cool thoroughly before cutting into bars.
  • Makes about 18 bars or squares.
  • To serve, top each bar with a generous spoonful of salted caramel sauce and a dollop of whipped cream
