Fearless Friday, Doodling and Coloring Pages

After many weeks without doing any artwork, I felt a little rusty when I got the chance to sit down with my sketchbook

Art is like anything else, if you don’t do it consistently, you will loose your feel or edge just a little

To loosen up I decided to  pick up my favorite pen, 0.4 microliner, and just start drawing.  Open up a book or magazine and choose one thing on the page that catches your eye and draw it

I drew these from a Mary Englebreit book

Then turn the page and pick out another thing

Before long you will have a complete page of doodles and drawings

Guess what?  You’ve just created your very own coloring book page!

You can leave it black and white or proceed to color with markers, pencils, watercolor…

experiment!

Try different color techniques, layering colors, combining media, shading…this is a learning experience, you’re not trying to create a masterpiece, just practice freely!

Try adding color first and then using a pen to define your subject

Try different color blends and lettering with a brush tip marker

Make up a fun alaphabet

Practice lettering with different font styles

To really get loose, quickly sketch your subject with just a few lines

All of these exercises will help you grow and “bloom!”

You can also try drawing from an actual coloring page, there are a zillion on Pinterest that you can look at for ideas

You can find printable fall coloring pages here

Have fun and Be Fearless!

  3. Love your lettering and coloring pages. Coloring is so much fun! You should write a coloring book. 😀

  4. These are wonderful exercises — and you’re right. If you don’t do it regularly, you lose your edge. I know — my summer is big art time. But that early part has a lot of epic fails when I haven’t kept up!

  5. Jenna, I think you would be a great hit with coloring books. Love this, looks like fun. Did you get pumpkins at TJ’s?

    • Yes, I didn’t get to TJs until this morning and people were buying pumpkins left and right, and flowers too, it was mobbed! I got 3 cinderellas for a stack and some minis. I have to stagger my pumpkin buying, they are so heavy! Have a great weekend Pam!

  6. Oh, Jenna, I wish I could do that. You do such a great job and it is so nice to enjoy something. I agree you could sell coloring books.

I search out coloring pages on the net whenever my grandkids come over, or I’m hosting a holiday and they’re visiting. I’d love to have a book of YOUR coloring pages to have them work on! I agree with the others who are encouraging you to make your own book! Your pictures have such a free spirit about them, they’d be fun to color for all ages!!

  17. I love this post SO MUCH! I enjoy your artwork, but particularly enjoy seeing the process. I doodle, but not much else, but I was fascinated seeing how doodles can come together to make an entire scene. I also love coloring.
