Fearless Friday, Winter Moon

My life has been so crazy lately, chasing squirrels at the beach house, dodging hurricanes, endless meetings about estate matters, transfers, accounts, and this week it was a crazy tooth that sent me to several dentists who ultimately decided that I was nuts   a little stressed… 😜

One of them even said, “Go to the beach and relax!”

So my painting opportunities have been limited, but thank goodness I have Fearless Friday to push me to create time for art

I can’t believe it’s November, and to start getting into the holiday spirit, I did a quick snowy scene for my Society 6 Shop

I underpainted a canvas with black gesso

I had a simple scene in mind with a group of evergreen trees and a full moon

I used various mixtures of titantium white, cobalt blue, and Payne’s gray acrylics

The lightest part of the sky will be where the moon will go

Next a large evergreen, painted with a brush loaded with shades of greens and yellow

Quick short strokes from top down, slightly curved to each side, indicating the shape and texture of the evergreen tree

Next a lighter tree, just in front of the first one

I continued to add to the forest, using a variety of shades of greens

I rarely use greens from a tube like the one in the photo below, upper left, because I think mixing your own greens produces a much more vibrant color.

I typically use 2 blues: cobalt, cerulean blue, 2 yellows: cadmium yellow medium, and Hansa yellow, to create a variety of green shades

I add white for a softer green or black for a more intense green

I paint fast, and like to use a disposable palette paper, with a spray water bottle at hand to keep the paint wet while I’m working

Next the snow on the ground was indicated with more fast, short strokes in various directions

Painting on a black underpainting creates effortless shadows and depth

Now for the full moon, deepened snow shadows, and a few snowflakes

This is how my  palette typically looks when I’m finished.  If you have paint left on your palette, transfer it to a plate or plastic container with a palette knife.  Spritz it with water and cover it with foil and refrigerate.  Paint will stay fresh for a couple of days!  If you have a plastic covered palette, even better!

Jenna I love that winter moon. I hope the time at the beach did you some good. I can only imagine the stressors of the estate, let alone adding the hurricanes and all that other stuff. It’s so hard to let things go, even when we know we can’t control most of the things we worry and fret over. I am the hardest person to realize that and actually stay calm. I am, by nature, wired for sound. Happy November and have a great weekend.

    • Thanks Rita, I am trying not to let things stress me out, and I know that worrying doesn’t fix anything! Yes, I am relaxing at the beach this weekend, no plans no stress, it’s lovely!

GAH! You’re so talented. I’m really jealous. I’ve tried painting. Not my thing. But I’m a fan of all artists!

  6. Jenna, I am so sorry that you are dealing with so much dear friend. I hope you took advice from the dentist and are at the beach. I love the winter moon painting, it really gets me in the spirit of the Christmas season. Rest and take care of yourself!

    • Thank you so much Pam, and yes I did! Pool heater is on and I’m swimming my laps, my favorite form of therapy! It is nice to get away, resting up for next week when I have another round of meetings and appts…

  8. I love your Winter Moon painting! I have got to get a painting area set up, so I can start painting again. You are such an inspiration. 🙂

    • It’s funny, yesterday I had a project in mind, but didn’t feel in the mood to do it, but I got everything set up and ready, thinking I would do it the next day, and a little later I found myself sitting there doing it! Having everything at the ready really makes a difference, happy painting Robin!

Creating is good for your soul Jenna! I know it must be hard to carve out time for yourself with all that’s been going on and you’ll be breathing a huge sigh of relief when hurricane season is over! I’ve been thinking about with the the holidays approaching.♥

  10. How I love this! Just dying to jump back into paints now that I’m home… soon. Time for Christmas thoughts!

Your painting turned out amazing, Jenna!! 🌲🌝 I enjoy seeing your progress photos. I understand about the stress thing… I came down with a cold this week. I hope your tooth settles down and you can get some needed rest. Hugs! ❤️

Great picture Jenna! It truely looks like a winter seen from here in Michigan deep in January. Love the moon and the snowflakes falling gently down. I understand the tooth thing,I have an upper molar that is being a little sensitive now too and I think it’s due to some sinus pressure, just getting over a mild cold. I’m thankful it didn’t go into sinusitis. Glad you can swim and relax in your pool! Wish we could, lol. Enjoy a lap for me! I have to go to the Y to get my water fix now. Hugs to you. ♥️

  13. Rosie M. says:

As this crazy season falls upon us, YOU, more than anyone I know right now has to listen to your body and soul and heed what they are saying: rest when you are tired; take time for yourself when you need it; and, take the comfort of your family and friends when offered. I love your Fearless Fridays and the paintings you share with us. The quiet beauty of your portrait today is very lovely in its solemnity as the hectic times begin. Thank you. And I hope that bothersome tooth issue gets resolved!

  14. Some time at the beach and a little painting, I hope it helped relieve some of the stress. Take care of yourself, each day should get a little easier.

  15. Mary-The Boondocks Blog says:

That is a really beautiful piece of art. I may try to imitate your work although I am not talented like you. Painting is always a great stress reliever!
