Fearless Friday, Seeing Double

How about a cocktail?
Looking at a photo of a Manhattan Cocktail by Cheryl Oz, I was fascinated by all the colors and shapes I saw, and decided to recreate this drink by using a combination of different colored shapes
I started with a very light pencil outline, then went over it in ink, making a few adjustments
This Zentangle like style of drawing is actually a great way to fix any mistakes as you go along, especially when drawing something symmetrical like a glass
I added a few shapes here and there to balance the original drawing and then filled in the rest of the glass with shapes where I saw the different colors and the cherry
I started applying color with Inktense watercolor pencils, yellow, orange and brown
I used a water pen brush to blend, but quickly was unhappy with the result…all my real watercolors are at the beach and I miss them so much! From now on they will travel with me
I used colored pencils and softened the color edges and tried to smooth out the blend
Then I used markers to finish the shapes
Next I had a little fun with colored pencil shadows
And some lines
Are you “Seeing Double?”
I am participating in the January Doodlewash Challenge this month, and I am about a week behind…but it has been a fun way to practice and experiment
I have learned, made mistakes, discovered, tried out new supplies…like these pretty colored pencils sent to me by a very thoughtful friend
Each pencil has a different floral design wrapper, and the leads are buttery soft …they are so much fun to use, thank you sweet Mary!
Here are some more sketches I’ve done using this same drawing style, I had a lot of fun with the fried egg!
You can see another post about Drawing by Shapes here, it’s a great way to break down a complex subject
Have some creative fun today and as always…
Be Fearless!

[…] One of my favorite ways to draw is to break down the subject into shapes, as previously demonstrated in Drawing by Shapes, and Seeing Double […]

I always enjoy seeing your creativity and fearless artistic process Jenna! We’re looking forward to some sunny skies and our first rain-free weekend in forever. I hope it’s the same for you! Enjoy your pencils. ♥
Yay for a sunny weekend!
I love your version of the manhattan!!!! Thanks for sharing the steps. I always particularly enjoy seeing the process! You are genius!
Thanks Jodi! I’m hoping to do some work on a large painting this weekend, I hope you have time to play with your paints too 🙂
Jenna, you inspire creativity, in the kitchen or with a brush! I hope you enjoy this sunny Friday!
Thank you Pam, and yes what a beautiful day and weekend we are going to have!
This looks very pretty, but I have to admit I was distracted by the parmesan bubble bites on the sidebar. I could click around and spend an hour reading your things — then of course be starving because of all the delicious food pictures!
ha, thanks Leslie Anne, you have a good eye, the Parmesan Bubble Bites are to die for…
Fun process and cool art making, your art reminds me of the Chuck Closes quote…”draw what you see not what you think you see.
Ahhhh…such a great quote! Thanks Sharon
I love those pencils! Might have to get them as a birthday present for a friend who might let me try them out! And bravo on your glass that actually looks like glass with liquid. I have the worst time with that. I’m going to have to review this tutorial more than once!
thanks Jeanie, I have been having fun with my sketchbook lately, trying a lot of different things…happy creating!
Looks good enough to take a sip!!
Very cool Jenna. I love seeing your process and I love your artwork! ❤️
thanks Patty Anne!
Very nice Manhattan, and I like how the colors are blended! Love it, Jenna!
Thanks RJ, it’s sort of a hot mess, but it was fun 🙂
I really enjoy seeing the process you use to create these wonderful pictures. It makes me want to get some colored pencils and give it a try.
Do!!! thanks Sheryl!
Looks like you have been having fun! 😍 I like how you used the Zentangle method to add to your drawings. The cocktail turned out amazing! 🍹 I see a fish in your egg! 😉
haha, yes it was fun!
Art is so relaxing, so this seems like a fun challenge. And it’s always fun to learn new techniques and buy art supplies 🙂
thank you, this was a fun drawing to do…
