Recipe Box, Sassy Southern Quiche

A favorite dip in the South is Hissy Fit Dip

Legend has it that Hissy Fit Dip was supposedly named after a spoiled Southern belle who was so busy socializing that by the time she got to the appetizer table the dip was all gone, and in true spoiled Southern belle form, she threw a big ole “hissy fit.”

This recipe has been in my archives since 2013, and I’m not sure where it originated, but it is widely agreed that the ingredients for this infamous dip are sausage and Velveeta…

Hissy Fit Dip

When I saw Hissy Fit Quiche over at Plain Chicken, I knew I had to make it!

Now if you are anti Velveeta cheese,

please substitute a creamy mild American or cheddar,

BUT

You will be missing the old fashioned Southern charm of it all

and you’ll have to just call it Sausage & Cheese Dip

😊

My version is slightly different than Stephanie’s, I used maple sausage, added diced sweet onion, used Velveeta cubes instead of shreds, grated Vermont Sharp White Cheddar, Garlic Salt Seasoning, an extra tsp of Worcestershire and another egg, and eliminated the sour cream

Brown the sausage and drain on paper towels, then saute onion in the sausage drippings and put them in the pie shell

I used cubes of Velveeta, which added some very creamy bites to the baked quiche

Grated Vermont White Cheddar gave it some tang

This Garlic Salt seasoning from Trader Joe’s is my new go to seasoning,

it’s a combo of garlic salt, roasted garlic, minced onion and parsley

You can easily mix up your own version

It’s wonderful for garlic bread

Beat eggs, stir in milk and seasoning

Pour over ingredients in crust

Bake at 350 for 45-60 minutes

Note: If you want to make this ahead of time, put the ingredients in the pie crust, beat the eggs and milk and seasoning but cover them both separately and refrigerate.  Pour milk mixture into crust just before baking.

All you need is a green salad

Quiche is my go to dish for using up leftovers too, if you have a pie crust, 4 eggs and 1 cup of cream or milk, you’re all set!  Fill the crust with cooked bacon, ham, chicken, sausage, sauteed vegetables, grated cheese…season and pour beaten eggs and milk over all.  Bake at 350 for 45-60 minutes and dinner is ready!
