Fearless Friday, Alabama Cornfield

I want to thank everyone for your prayers and concerns for my fellow Alabamians impacted by the recent tornadoes…Alabama generally gets only negative publicity– storms, politics, racial issues…but it is truly a magnificent and beautiful state.  We have mountains, lakes, beautiful trees, waterfalls, mild winters, and sugar white sandy beaches on our gulf coast…and most importantly, the kindest, friendliest people anywhere.

For today’s Fearless Friday I want to show you this step by step watercolor I painted when I was on the coast a few weeks ago

The caption reads, “This was such an inspiring landscape in Talladega County.  A bountiful cornfield with the Talladega Mountains in the distance.” John Shadrick, Alabama magazine

It was warm enough to paint outside that day

Did you know that watercolor artists in cold climates

who paint outside add vodka to their brush water

to keep it from freezing??

If it’s that cold I’d be painting inside!!

This is just a simple painting, swashes of color mimicking the distant sky, mountains and trees

Working toward the foreground, I added more color to the field and indicated the flowers

Next came the clouds, very loosely suggested

Then a little more definition with lines, darkening of the sky and mountains,

and indication of the corn stalks with fast, loose strokes

A few more lighter strokes indicating the stalks further away,

fading into the distance

and stems for the flowers in the foreground

Be sure to look at your paintings in a frame,

Frames can make a big difference!

Try relaxing and experimenting with your paint brush,

Let yourself go and see what happens…

Be Fearless!

Love the step by step you shared with us… and we have in and though Alabama and you are right – very beautiful but tends to only get chatted about with certain news

  2. Jenna, cornfields and cottonfields are two of my favorites! Alabama gets a lot of negative press, but you described its beauty and people perfectly! Have a wonderful weekend.

So lovely! I just adore when you show us your steps and process! Love that vodka in the water story! I agree – if it is that cold, stay inside and paint – and drink the vodka! LOL! Cheers! 🙂

This is beautiful! I am going to see if my boys would like to attempt this for our art class this week. It looks simple enough following your instructions. Pinned.

Love your landscape and inspiration photo Jenna! I agree, save the vodka for cocktail hour and paint indoors! 🙂

Love Fearless Friday as I always wanted to be an artist. But since I can’t even do stick figures God blessed us with a daughter who became–an artist! She is a restoration artist right now, and I am so proud. AND she was born in Alabama while we were there for a year or so when my husband worked for the railroad. I loved Alabama (Birmingham for us) as the folks were so kind. I am a Georgia girl through and through but Alabama was a welcoming home during our short time there. We had the most wonderful pediatrician, too–made motherhood less overwhelming. Yep, Alabama is my sister state.

    • Thank you Shelia, and I am so glad to hear from a fellow proud Alabamian! I am very impressed that your daughter is a restoration artist, she must be very talented! If you’ve always wanted to be an artist, you should take a class! Art is like everything else, you have to learn the basics and practice, practice, practice!
