Home Decor, The Case of the Curious Tulips

We have had such a rainy, dreary winter in the South

I’ve been filling my house with colorful flowers

Roses, daffodils tulips

I’ve never been especially drawn to tulips until I got some for Valentine’s day

Darling Daughter & Nicest Guy gave me this gorgeous arrangement

Red tulips surrounded by white and pink hydrangeas

in a beautiful frosted pink glass vase

I took it to the beach with me and added pink alstromeria

when some of the flowers started to fade…

The drooping tulips didn’t make the return trip

so I filled in with more alstromeria

and a red rose given to me by Big E

I just adored looking at this arrangement from my family

When the hydrangeas faded {some lasted 2 weeks!}

I added new red tulips

It wasn’t long before they started doing some curious things!

They started “looking around”

Everyday their position would change…

After several days the color started to turn

They were fading, but still quite active!

Even the boys noticed

“Gigi, your flowers are trying to escape!” said Big E

“Those flowers are so pretty Mom…” said HHjr

I bought more tulips to see what they would do

These were pretty, but just stood straight and tall,

they wouldn’t dance for me!

So to all my knowledgeable gardening friends,

Were the tulips trying to escape?

Were they turning toward the light?

Or were they just curious?

Tulips are fun to draw and paint

  1. How funny … out of the mouths of children … yes, like let me out of the water! I love tulips and their draping/wild tendencies….how nice of your daughter and the Nicest Guy to gift you the beautiful flowers. Love tulips…actually worked with them yesterday…beautiful arrangement Jenna…enjoy your flowers!

  2. Lovely flowers, so nice to see such pretty colors. I am ready for spring!!

  3. Sharon Mann says:

A generous amount color today! Just what I needed. The tulips are gorgeous.

  4. Shelia says:

Hey, the tulips were moving to get the light! I had to know and found a website that explains. Go to the site below and especially read the section on “Tulips and Light”–never knew this. Love your flowers–and a good mystery.:

    • Thanks for doing the research Shelia! Wow, that is fascinating! It’s unbelievable that a cut flower can be so reactive, and Mary just informed me that they can continue to grow! I’m going to get some more and do some experimenting!

beautiful! I ADORE tulips! Real, faux, painted 🙂 <3

  9. Cyndi Raines says:

How pretty and I loved that they danced for you! ⚘⚘⚘

  10. Diane says:

Tulips are such a nice breath of Spring air! They are also geotropic! The force and response to gravity causes them to arrange themselves in such a beautiful way!

  11. Mary says:

Beautiful Jenna! There’s nothing like a little flower therapy when it’s dreary outside or just to brighten things up indoors. I’m sure you read the link that Sheila left about them following the the light, but fun fact, they also continue to grow up to an inch or more after they’re cut! I have bought them a week before I needed them for an arrangement and placed them in a glass jar with water and some floral preservative in the door of my fridge in the garage. They keep beautifully as long as they’re not stored with fruits or veggies until you’re ready to bring them inside to use them. ♥

    • I have been thinking about the info Sheila shared and combined with what you just told me about continuing to grow, that’s almost weird! How can a cut flower do these things??? I have put flowers in the garage fridge before, and it really does work! Thanks for the tips Mary!

  12. Jenna, I love tulips and your arrangement from your daughter and son-in-law is beautiful. I have yellow and pink tulips on my table this morning, a breath of spring on a dark and cloudy morning!

  13. Carol says:

I’m in love with flowers – they make a room come alive. You have so many gorgeous bouquets. Love, love, love this post!

  14. Chloe Crabtree says:

This is one of the reasons I usually steer away from tulips! I love them, but I want my flowers to stay where I put them!

  15. Bonnie Morgan says:

I love this post. Glad you enjoyed your tulips. Tulips will grow on you overnight. Putting them in ice water slows it down and putting them in the refrigerator at night. However, it fits right in the new free-flowing style of flower arranging.

  16. Good question. They might have been different strains of tulip. That’s a possibility. Or just needed repeated bottom cutting for water. You’ve got me — all I know is the arrangements — all of them — were lovely!

  17. Ricki Treleaven says:

Cute post, Jenna. I bet the kids thought it was entertaining watching the tulips dance around! I just love tulips…they are a favorite of mine!

  18. Jenny Sparmo says:

What beautiful flower arrangements. I love tulips , they are just so pretty. The dancing tulips were neat. I hope spring and the sun comes soon. Thanks for sharing at Merry Monday.

Jenna I love a wayward tulip or two as one never knows just where they will end up next. Of course I also have faux tulips that I love just as much as they sorta stay put. Great post and thanks for linking up with our Celebrate Your Story. Hugs always
