Recipe Box, Italian Sandwich Ring with Smokey Pimiento Cheese

Originally when I was developing this recipe,

I was thinking I’d make a savory version of a King cake for Mardi Gras

But since Mardi Gras is way yesterday,

I decided to just call it an Italian Sandwich Ring

It is actually similar to a New Orleans muffaletta sandwich

minus the olive relish…

I’m not an olive fan, so hmmmm…

what could I replace it with to bring some zing…

Smoked Gouda Pimiento Cheese!

When I saw this recipe from Mary@HomeisWheretheBoatis,

I couldn’t wait to make it, and this was the perfect opportunity!

Instead of mayonnaise, I used Stonewall Kitchen Maple Bacon Aioli*

this stuff is nectar of the gods

I used 5 cheese Italian blend sandwich slices, salami, deli ham, Pillsbury Crescent Roll Grands, honey mustard and my version of smoked Gouda pimiento cheese

Lay your dough out on parchment paper, this will make your life much easier later

You can use any brand of crescent roll dough or a dough sheet, even pizza dough

I spread a thin layer of honey mustard over dough and topped it with a layer of pimiento cheese

I made my pimiento cheese fairly dry,

adding just enough Maple Bacon Aioli to barely hold it together

Next a layer of ham, then salami

 cheese slices

Starting from the long side, begin to roll dough into a log

Once the log is formed, roll it up in the parchment paper

Refrigerate for 30 minutes if possible

Now the fun really begins!

Unwrap dough log, keeping it on the parchment paper

Form it into a ring and join the ends together

pinching to seal

Spread top of dough with a generous slather of softened butter

Sprinkle with seasoning and Parmesan**

Place parchment with ring onto a baking sheet

Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until dough is golden

Garnish with fresh rosemary

Let sandwich sit for 10 minutes before slicing

It can be sliced in different sizes for different appetites,

or even mini slices for party appetizers

Italian Sandwich Ring

Cook Time 30 minutes
Course Appetizer, Main Course
Cuisine American, Italian
Servings 8

Ingredients

  • 1 can 8 Pillsbury Grands {or regular} Crescent Rolls or 1 can Crescent Roll dough sheet
  • 1/4 cup honey mustard dressing {I used Ken’s}
  • 1 1/2 cups Smoked Gouda Pimiento Cheese {recipe below}
  • 6-8 thin slices deli ham
  • 12 thin slices Genoa or hard salami
  • 6 thin sandwich slices Italian blend cheese or Havarti, Fontina
  • 2 T soft butter
  • Garlic Salt Seasoning or use garlic powder, Italian seasoning and parsley
  • 1-2 sprigs fresh rosemary

Smoked Gouda Pimiento Cheese

  • 4 oz smoked Gouda, grated
  • 6 oz extra sharp Cheddar cheese, grated
  • 4 oz chopped pimientos, rinsed and drained
  • 1/4 cup Maple Bacon Aioli** or quality mayonnaise

Instructions

  • Unroll dough onto a piece of parchment paper. Pinch seams to seal.
  • Spread honey mustard over dough.
  • Using a spoon, place small dollops of Smoked Gouda Pimiento Cheese evenly over the mustard, using your fingers if necessary.
  • Top cheese with slices of ham, then salami, then Italian blend slices.
  • Starting from the long side of dough, carefully roll dough and fillings into a log, and roll until the seam side is down on the paper. Roll dough up in paper and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Place parchment roll onto a cookie sheet and unwrap dough roll. Carefully form into a ring, bringing ends together and pinch well to seal.
  • Spread top of roll liberally with soft butter. Season with garlic seasoning and sprinkle grated Parmesan liberally over all.
  • Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until dough is cooked through {check inside of the ring} and golden. Garnish with fresh rosemary. Cut into slices to serve.

Smoked Gouda Pimiento Cheese

  • Mix everything together. This is a fairly “dry” version, add more mayonnaise or aioli if desired

Notes

Maple Bacon Aioli is made by Stonewall Kitchen and is available in many upscale grocery stores or on StonewallKitchen.com .  Substitute good quality mayonnaise mixed with cooked maple bacon pieces if desired
Keyword baked sandwich, crescent roll ring, Italian sandwich, party sandwich ring, sandwich ring, stuffed crescent rolls

*Stonewall Kitchen Maple Bacon Aioli is available at upscale markets and online here

Or you can make your own with this recipe here, just substitute maple bacon for regular bacon, or just mix crisp bacon crumbles into mayonnaise

In Birmingham, AL, Maple Bacon Aioli is available at Fresh Market and Piggly Wiggly River Run

**I used Trader Joe’s Garlic Salt seasoning, but you can use garlic salt or powder, seasoned salt, minced onion, parsley, Italian seasoning.

This reheats beautifully and can be frozen after baking

Momma Mia, it’s delizioso!

Thank you for the inspiration Mary!
