Fearless Friday, Casual Bouquet

After taking an art workshop recently, I couldn’t wait to get back to my own easel, and my own painting style!

During the workshop I experimented with painting on a new surface, Ampersand gessoboard

This is really becoming popular with professional artists because of it’s durability and it’s much easier to ship

It’s so different from painting on canvas, the surface is slick and doesn’t grab the paint like a textured surface does…

So far I am not a convert but I did do this painting on a 12″ x 12″ gessoboard and thought it would be fun to compare with another recent painting I did on a canvas

At the end of the post

you can take a little quiz just for fun

but for now,

Let’s paint!

I painted the gessoboard black, and taped the inspiration photo and color charts I made during the workshop to my easel

I use paint to do the initial sketch and to lay out the composition

Once I was happy with the general composition I began filling in the background

Then I went back to the flowers and leaves

The flowers are built up with thick strokes of paint

Quick, loose strokes

Pink Flower Therapy  12″ x 16″ acrylic on canvas

“Casual Bouquet” 12″ x 12″ acrylic on gessoboard

The one on the left, “Casual Bouquet,” is painted on Ampersand gessoboard with a black underpainting

The one on the right, “Pink Flower Therapy,” is painted on canvas, with a red underpainting

They are very similar in style and subject, which one do you like better?

Can you tell they are painted on different surfaces?

Which underpainting color do you think is the most successful?

Thanks for painting with me today

and thank you for your input~

Jenna, IMHO, your Pink Flower Therapy just sparkles. Maybe it’s the red underpainting, maybe it’s the yellow in the leaves, Or working on canvas. I love to paint, and I think your canvas reflects your own feelings, too. Thanks for a great blog.

  2. Love them both! I will be introducing a NY artist on my blog in mid April, who paints flowers – I think you will love her work!

  3. Sharon Mann says:

What beautiful lush colors and paint strokes. Jenna, keep painting, your art making is magnificent!

  4. CoziNest says:

    Beautiful!

  5. Jodi says:

OMG! They are both truly amazing and both have their place in the art world! You are such a gifted artist!

  6. Good morning Jenna. I love to see the steps you take to get to your masterpiece! It is such a happy, beautiful painting. Have a great weekend!

  7. Kari says:

I love both of them Jenna but if I had to choose, I think I would choose the one on the right. There is something about it that makes me smile. Hugs dear friend and keep up the great work.

I love both of these!! I think the one on the right is my favorite because it’s a little lighter and the colors really pop. I love the pillows!

  9. Jenna, both of these are fabulous! Since you asked us to choose, I will have to go with the one on the canvas. The red underpainting just makes all the colors pop. Again, they are both fabulous! Have a wonderful weekend!

    • thanks Pam, yes that one seems to be the favorite…I am anxious to paint another one on red and experiment with other color underpaintings too…Yes, I hope you have a wonderful weekend too!

I love both of them!! ❤️❤️
    Beautiful flowers, Jenna!!

Hi Jenna, I think they are both excellent paintings!! 🌸💗🌸 I have tried gesso board but it has been awhile. Did you enjoy your class? 🎨💕

    • I did! But it was a challenge, she had us doing everything in an entirely new way for me, so I was out of my comfort zone most of the time. But I did learn and grow I think, and it was wonderful to not think about anything but art for 2 days!

      • Jill Kuhn says:

I imagine it wasn’t easy doing things totally different! I would have probably just done it my way! Lol! 🤣😁

Hi, Jenna. “Pink Flower Therapy” absolutely sings to me. I love the soft colors and the realistic shapes of the flowers. You never cease to amaze me with your talent and willingness to share your creative process. I probably will never paint ( singing is more my muse), but I have learned sooo much from you about how art is created: never realized that subjects of paintings were created by a layering technique, and how the color of “underpainting” works to create the subject’s look. Fascinating. Thank you for sharing all this.

    • Thanks Rosie, Pink Flower Therapy seems to be the hands down winner! I am happy to share what I know, but there is no right or wrong way to do art. Now singing…that is something I definitely cannot do!!

  13. I like the one on the right — the tall vertical. I think that’s the canvas. Both art pieces are lovely but there’s something about the one on the right that just calls to me more.

  14. Cyndi Raines says:

Both are very pretty, but I join the others with my choice being the one on the right. I really like the selection of flowers, it speaks softness and beauty to me. Kudos to you for trying a new technique! You go girl! 😉

  15. Benita says:

Jenna, I love both of them! I don’t know that I could choose a favorite because they each have different elements and the depth is different for each one. You do such a beautiful job! Hugs!

  16. Mary says:

I love seeing your creativity bloom Jenna! I think I prefer the black underpainting! ♥

  17. Julie says:

Hi Jenna, I can’t help it but I love them both. I love that you tried a different style of painting. You make the pretties floral paintings.
Thanks as always for sharing at C&C with J&J.
    Enjoy the week.
