Fearless Friday, “Stand Alone”

Today’s painting was inspired by this single ranunculus bloom that I placed in a juice glass on a side table next to my favorite chair.  As I glanced at it often while I was working, I became fascinated by the complexity of the composition of shapes and colors I saw.  I snapped a photo and decided to paint this brave little bloom and elevate it to glory!

I’m painting in acrylic today, fast and loose on a large canvas covered with black gesso

I established the position of the flower first, having a print out of my photo by my easel for reference

I painted the bloom with large strokes of several shades of yellow and deliberately exaggerated the stem refracted in the water

Next, I started painting the glass with line and shapes

Deeper colored reflections

Then I began to lay in the background, working quickly and not thinking too much, just letting it happen

I established the surface of the table next and continued to add to the water in the glass

Next I went back to the bloom itself and detailed and darkened the petals

The glass waterline and water still needed work, and I added some thin washes to tone down the black and called it a day.  I had been painting for about 2 hours

I have learned that when you get bogged down, or tired, it is best to STOP.  Walk away and come back fresh with new eyes.

The next day, I mixed up some pale blues, and greens and quickly edited the water in the glass, and extended the leaf under the bloom over the rim

  4. Ranunculus are one of my favorites and you captured it so well. It looks terrific on the canvas!

    • Thanks Jeanie, the rest of the ranunculus were spent and I was throwing them away when I pulled this one bloom from the trash because it was still pretty. I cut most of the stem off and put it in a small glass and enjoyed it for several more days, such a brave little bloom!
