Fearless Friday, Watercolor Hibiscus

“Hey Gigi, can I paint too?”

“I want to paint!”

CC and Big E proceeded to join me for a little watercolor fun

I got 2 hibiscus trees for either side of the outdoor kitchen, one red and one “fiesta”

The blooms are just gorgeous!

I decided to paint this bloom while CC and Big E were creating their masterpieces

They insisted on using my watercolors so

I let them squeeze just a tiny bit of a few watercolor tubes

onto a plastic palette

and showed them how to mix it with water

They had fun experimenting,

mixing different colors to create new ones

I told them how to make black by mixing a deep red and green

They thought that was very cool!

In between questions I began to build the fiesta bloom

Adding additional layers of color as it dried

Some areas were painted wet into wet

I continued to add layers until I had just enough to suggest the flower

Then I added a few bricks in the background for definition

For the final touch I painted some details with a white gel pen

The stamen was indicated with small touches of brown

Stamen detail

“Fiesta Hibiscus”  9″ x 12″ watercolor on paper

I told my future artists how important it was to change the water often

Big E had a great time pouring the dirty water over the rail and refilling the container

“Hurry up Eli, I need more water!!” exclaimed CC

And here are their creations!

I wish I had gotten them to sign their paintings!

Happy Painting and Be Fearless!

  1. So great to see how unique each creation turned out! What a great teacher you are Gigi! Priceless.

  2. Big E and CC are being taught by the best and they are so cute! I love those Tropical Escape hibiscus, their blooms are brilliant and huge, and your water color is perfect. Happy Weekend Jenna!

  3. I love your littles and I especially love how you are teaching them good art habits! Clean water is essential! I long for the day when Carson will be old enough to paint with me — and hope he has the inclination to do so! Your hibiscus is lovely — both the real one and your painting!

Oh the joy and fun! I LOVE your painting! And your grandies’ paintings just warm my heart! LOVE LOVE LOVE everything about all of this <3

A very special post! I love your up-and-coming artists and their creations. Your painting is one of my favorites that I have watched you create, and I love the final presentation of the six steps of your process all together in one shot. You can really see how the hibiscus evolved from some brush strokes into a bright and colorful masterpiece. A lovely way to start my day, as always.

Thank you for the tutorial and the finished painting is gorgeous. Your budding artists are following in your footsteps and I can only imagine how proud you are. Have a great weekend!

Jenna, we have hibiscus blooming year round here in Florida and many are saucer sized and would be great ‘models” for your beautiful artwork. However, the Tropical Fiesta you chose is perfect and in tree form should give you years of enjoyment, not to say perfect for your little budding artists to paint in ‘stages” of growth…for them and the flowers. Thanks for sharing and have a great week-end.

    • I know you are surrounded by huge hibiscus bushes and they are gorgeous! We used to have them growing along the fence by our pool but the roots actually grew into our pool liner so we had to take them out. I do love the huge blooms and such fun to paint!

What a fun introduction to watercolor.

  9. Benita says:

Love your hibiscus and those sweet photos of the kiddos! How sweet that they want to paint! I have never bought a hibiscus…don’t know how well they would grow in the Texas heat…we don’t seem to have enough humidity during the summer! Hugs and happy weekend!

I believe this is my favorite painting of all, Jenna. Such a happy flower and you captured it to perfection!

  11. Shelia says:

Great hibiscus, oh, favored artist! And those memories you made with some young artists are more priceless than all the fine art ever created. We shall all blink and our grand babies will be grown–the time, where DOES it go? But as they say in Australia, “Good on ya’ Gigi for capturing time in your art and on your blog for us!”
