Fearless Friday, Alabama Magnolia

Magnolias are in full bloom in Alabama, and after reading a recent post, The Magnificent Magnolia, by my fellow Alabamian friend Pam@Everyday Living, I had to paint one of these magnificent beauties

I have painted magnolia blooms many times on glassware and buckets, the fat velvety white petals can be created easily with acrylic paint and a big round brush

But I was anxious to use watercolor, and try to capture the shades and tones that make up these gorgeous flowers

I started with a pencil sketch

If you look closely, you can see many colors in the petals

I exaggerated these shades/colors with washes

Next I painted in a dark background

This made the white petals really pop

 I deepened the previous washes

More washes and exaggerated color and stamen details

“Alabama Magnolia” 9 x 12″ watercolor on paper

Try color exaggeration in your next creation, it adds a lot of drama

I believe this is my favorite painting by you. It made me take a closer look at the magnolia blossoms on the tree in our yard. I can almost feel the texture of the blossom in your painting. The colors are wonderful. You make painting seem so effortless. I have been taking art lessons, and I know that it will take years of practice for me. You are blessed with a natural talent for art. Thank you for sharing that talent!

    • I am really flattered by your comment Ann, thank you so much! If it makes you feel any better, the last 3 paintings I started were disasters, so just hang in there and keep practicing!

  2. Jenna, what a pleasant surprise! Your watercolor of the magnolia bloom is absolutely stunning! You have such an eye for color and I agree with Ann that I can almost feel the texture! Thank you for the shout-out dear friend, you have an amazing gift!

  3. I love all the layers here. I think it’s hard to paint anything white — even with adding all the colors of the shading and somehow this works! I know it’s a white magnolia but I can’t find the white! Lovely!

Divine Jenna, what a beautiful magnolia. Have a great weekend.

Jenna, that is so beautiful! The magnolia trees here in Texas do not get nearly as large and the blooms are not as pretty! Have a great weekend! Hugs!

Wow! What a beautiful flower and you totally captured it’s beauty. The closest thing we have to it up North is a Tulip Tree and their flowers are lovely as well. I think the south is extra blessed with your Magnolias and Gardenias. Happy weekend! 🌹

You’re such a talented painter. I helped a friend’s husband plan a surprise party for his wife, my girlfriend, which is tonight, and the florist has included a magnolia blossom in each of the centerpieces because it’s her favorite flower. Can’t wait to see them! (It’s out of town so I’m not going till later.)

A step by step tutorial with your paintings really shows how talented your are Jenna! This has to be one of my favorites, favorite being the daffodils 🙂 The was not an easy capture I would think. The colors are stunning. I love magnolias, a southern delight. Now you can enjoy the bloom all year long. Hope you are enjoying the weekend……..
