Fearless Friday, Patriotic Painting Crafts

In the spirit of patriotism this week

{Be sure to see the tablescape hop this week here}

We are going to do some easy and fun painting today!

While I was updating decor in the city,

replacing the daffodil wreath on my front door

I realized I only had ONE red white and blue decoration

Patriotic Door Basket

It has been our family tradition to be at the beach the week of the 4th, so all my decorations are down there…I got to thinking, surely I have something else around here…

Ah ha!

The State Pride Sign with a flag

I always keep an empty wine bottle or two around in case I get an urge to paint or decoupage one, so I decided to paint a flag bottle

I first sprayed the entire bottle white {pretend you see a photo of a white bottle}

Then I taped off the bottom part with paper and masking tape, and sprayed the upper bottle blue

When the paint was dry, it was time for the stars and stripes

I painted the stripes like they are waving in the wind, that way they don’t have to be perfect

I used a flat brush, and painted them in one continuous motion, from the blue to the bottom

Polka dots stand in for the, much trickier to paint, stars

TIP for glass painting!

When painting on a smooth surface like glass or ceramic, use a piece of tin foil to practice your design on, it’s smooth surface mimics glass and you can get a much better feel for what you are painting than you can on a piece of paper

I went to Target to get a little bling

unfortunately it was the day their computers were down and it took forever to check out!

But I did find this cute container and mini grapevine wreath in the $ spot,

and some red, white, & blue bandanas

The plaid vase would be easy to recreate on a jar, spray the jar white, then use a flat brush to paint the red and blue grid, using masking or painter’s tape to ensure even lines

I had fun experimenting with different looks…the burlap flag garland is a recent purchase from Hobby Lobby

I ultimately shortened the garland and tied one of the flags around the State Pride sign

Another easy flag craft is a flag rimmed plate

Buy a plain white plate with a raised border {Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Old Time Pottery}

Use curable paint for glass to paint red stripes {with a large flat brush} and a solid blue section

Once the blue is dry add “stars” by dipping the handle tip of your paint brush into white paint and then applying the dots with a firm motion

Practice on a sheet of paper to get the feel of this, it’s a great way to make small clean dots

Follow the directions on the paint to cure your creation so it will be washable

While you’re at it, paint some flag glasses too!
