Fearless Friday, Window Box

Between traveling and preparing for Labor Day weekend

I haven’t painted for almost 2 weeks!

😱

One of my favorite ways to warm up is to do line drawings, looking at a book or a magazine, choosing one item from a page and creating sort of a collage

The one below is from a Mary Englebreit book

This more serious botanical drawing, is from a botanical coloring book

Copying other drawings is a great way to practice and learn

I chose a bloom or two from several pages and created my own “page”

Botanical Coloring Book available here

Today I want to share this fast and fun watercolor method

A little color, a little line, a little imagination…

I painted this from a photo from Unsplash

Unsplash provides free useable images, a great source for painting inspirations!

Start with color

My goal with this painting was to simply suggest the various elements

This painting is going to provide just enough information for the viewer to imagine the entire scene

The suggestion of a window and brick wall

Ink to suggest the flower shapes

Sometimes less can be more

Additional line work to define the window and bricks

“Window Box,” 8″ x 10″ watercolor and ink on mixed media paper

This is another painting I did using the same method

“Simple Flowers” 9″ x 12″ watercolor and ink on mixed media paper

Have fun and Be Fearless!

I really enjoyed the flower box. We just got back from the Bavarian Alps… where every house has a window box under every window!

    Well done my friend!

  2. Good morning, dear Jenna. I am a sucker for a pretty windowbox and you sure created a beauty. Have a wonderful weekend!!

  3. I love your window. I have such problems with water and reflection and this is really pretty darned perfect. Love the window box!

Beautiful! I wish my Lobelia looked that full and pretty. I’ve had to pull it out after the heat of summer, but it never even came close to looking like this. My geraniums either.
    Happy Weekend, Jenna!

I always enjoy your tutorials. I know that you say this is easy, but watercolor takes skill. Trust me. I’ve tried this. Mine looked a bit like baby mess. Ew.

Great minds do think alike!! Love your Mary Engelbrecht page!! And your botanical drawing!! WOW!! I also like your window box and seeing your progress photos. You are so talented Jenna!! 🌺🌸🌼🌻

    • thanks Jill, I love to draw from the botanical book, I love the way the artist uses fine line shading, similar to Sharon Mann…I wonder how she’s doing, have you been in touch with her since her surgury?

      • Jill Kuhn says:

Hi Jenna, I have several botanical drawing books but I don’t have that one! 🌿😃 I like how you used it to create your own drawing. Sharon is posting on IG so you can find her art there. She is doing amazing!! She is so positive. I think the treatments zap here energy though so it is hard to keep up with the blogging. 💗

      • ah, great to hear this!! I will follow her, thanks Jill!
