Fearless Friday, A Walk Through the Woods

Let’s talk a walk in the woods today

This photograph by Andrew Neel on Unsplash was my inspiration

I started with a light blue wash for the sky

Next came the path

I used a fan brush to add a layer of texture to the ground

I haven’t used this brush but a few times

It dried in spikes after the last time I used it so I was able to create rake like stroke

Next I painted the trees

More trees

The paper looks ripply right now, but since I am painting on a block pad, it will flatten as it dries

Leaves were added in loose shapes of greens,

yellow and several shades of orange, red and brown

I darkened the sky at the horizon for contrast

I blended the blue in and deepened the other colors

I decided to add details with ink as it is Inktober!

Which one do you like better, ink or no ink?

Happy Painting…

Be Fearless!

Your fall painting came out so nice. You do such beautiful art work. Happy Friday and weekend.

  2. Beautiful! Thank you for posting this, now I need a walk in the woods. Only, how did it get to be Friday already?

  3. Sally H Clem says:

Lovely fall walking path, Jenna! Wish I was there now. I think I like the ink version but both are beautiful.

  4. I’ve taken to adding ink details to most of my paintings — for whatever reason it kind of “finishes” them. I like this very much, Jenna. I’ve not painted for a bit and am thinking autumn is so full of inspiration. You sure found it here!

  5. I love your watercolor tutorial!

  6. Michelle says:

Such a beautiful painting! It makes me feel so peaceful just looking at it.

  7. pattyanneart says:

    Beautiful work, Jenna!
I love both and your tutorial is great!! 💚🍃🍁🧡

  8. Cyndi Raines says:

I think they are both great. The water colored one is soft and dreamy. The one with the ink is more definitive and really stands out. I can’t decide which I like more, I think it’s a tie! Good job Jenna, you’ve captured fall and a walk in the woods! 🍊🍂

  9. Lorraine says:

I like both! Lovely work as usual. You are so talented! I have not painted since July. I have to get back into it soon.

  10. Kathy T says:

PEACE. I just strolled through the painting pictures and it instantly relaxed me. It was like I was in the woods myself and just sort of zenned out. I have to keep this tutorial to look at in case I am ever stressed.

  11. Jill Kuhn says:

Hi Jenna, I love your fall scene!! 😊 I like the interesting strokes you got with the fan brush. I will have to give this brush a try. I like both pictures with the ink and without it. For me it gives a different feeling. Which did you like best? 🍁🍂

  12. Mary says:

Love your walk in the woods Jenna! It’s a tie for me too as to which I prefer!

  13. Good job! I want to walk right into your painting on a crisp fall day! I just took up watercolor a few months ago, so this is inspiring.

  14. Hope Smitherman says:

I love how your tutorials really break down the steps into bite-sized chunks. Both of the paintings are great, I like the pen in the one with pen as it seems a little lighter, like it needs the boost from the outlining. The other is lovely just as it is.

  15. Rosie M. says:

Oh, Jenna, while scrolling through your post today, I just stopped and stared at your finished painting (I LOVE both, but I do believe my eyes really focused on the outlined painting more). I just stared and enjoyed all the peaceful, colorful images and could almost smell the fall air! Absolutely lovely! Bravo!
