Tablescapes, Thanksgiving Thoughts

Are you all set for Thanksgiving?

Ours will be small and casual

After years of doing Thanksgiving with HH’s sister and her whole family,

Everyone is going in a different direction now

Our children are grown and have their own family obligations

HHjr will be the head chef and we have yet to collaborate on the menu

What are the dishes that must must be on your table?

My favorites are stuffing of course, like my Mom’s with Pecans

or I might get fancier and make

Holiday Dressing with Foccacia, Cornbread & Sausage

and Mirmie’s Creamed Onions with Chopped Peanuts are a holiday must!

Maple Roasted Butternut Squash with Brussels Sprouts {or broccoli}

is elegant, mouthwatering and super easy

I also love green bean casserole and you can find a slow cooker version here

I am thinking about changing it up this year and trying

a version with asparagus

Do you make homemade rolls?

I like to use these mini cutting boards for “bread and butter plates”

I will probably make Rosemary Parmesan Biscuit Bubbles

or

Julie’s Creamy Corn Muffins

The boys have to have potatoes,

Mashed potatoes can be a lot of work, our go to potato dish is a hash brown casserole

like this EZ Ranch Hashbrown Casserole

Oh and cranberry sauce!

I have a super easy homemade one coming up tomorrow,

You can make it now and stash it in your fridge until the big day!

There will also be some wonderful cranberry holiday appetizers

Perfect for upcoming gatherings, football, and holiday parties!

As you can see, I am still in the thinking stage

I would love to hear your ideas for a Thanksgiving must have dish!

Two weeks away!

I am so thankful you dropped by!

  1. Well, we’re all set apart from we don’t know if we are doing it at my house or Rick’s, with the kids or without the kids, or going somewhere for dinner. Or the shopping because we don’t know if we’ll be bringing a dish to pass or doing the whole nine yards. All I know is that I scheduled my colonoscopy a couple of days before so I could indulge a bit!

  2. I still have to get the turkey, and decide on what stuffing, but the cranberry sauce has to be the jellied stuff right out of the can, LOL! I have my table done, but no one is coming to eat with us, so it is just for decor.

My god, it is only two weeks away, isn’t it?!! Besides a turkey, even though I’ll have a visiting pescatarian, my husband asks for creamed peas. 🙄 I always make a fuss, but then, I eat them too. Guess my bechamel is so good I could probably serve creamed shoe soles and it would be good!

    • You could always do lobster, did you know it was one of the foods for the first Thanksgivings? I don’t eat peas very often, I bet they are good with bechamel sauce!

      • chef mimi says:

I don’t think any lobsters live in Oklahoma 🤣 or I definitely would! The family would definitely revolt if I did’t serve turkey and gravy, but I do have to work harder because of the pescatarian.

Jenna, your Thanksgiving dishes sound delicious. I love the idea of trying asparagus instead of green beans in the green bean casserole. For Thanksgiving we dine at my parent’s house for lunch and then we go to my in-laws house for dinner. It’s kind of hectic doing it that way, but I’m grateful for my family. A must have dish for my Thanksgiving is my grandmother’s cornbread dressing. Your table is beautiful set for the holiday! Those flowers are gorgeous! Enjoy your day!!!

    • Thanks Shannon, I love to hear what everyone’s traditions are and your grandmother’s cornbread dressing has to be wonderful! Lucky you, you don’t have to do the cooking and hosting! I am actually going to the beach house with my son and his boys for the week and my daughter and her family will join us Thanksgiving evening after having an early lunch with her husband’s family. Tough day for them, but they insist and lucky for me to get to have them too. Can you believe I’ve had those flowers for 2 weeks?!?!? They must have been REALLY fresh when I bought them!

Your table is so pretty! After reading about all that good food I’m ready for Thanksgiving now. 😀 My favorites were my grandma’s gravy and her stuffing. I miss those foods almost as much as I miss her.

Love your table all ready for the big day. Not sure here if were are coming or going but a table is being set in the dinning room either way. I know you and HHjr will enjoying planning your menu. I have my main Thanksgiving menu we use every year. I do change up the sides and deserts but true to my mom and dad’s dressing. It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without it. True to tradition.

    • Thank you Emily, I have a feeling HHjr and I will go pretty rogue with our menu…we’ve even talked about not having turkey 😱 so we’ll see! I hope it works out that your family can get together…yes, some things have to be the same to keep with tradition!

  7. Jenna, your menu sounds perfect, I know you are just in the planning stages. Our must haves…my Mom’s dressing, Butch’s rosemary mashed potatoes, Mom’s sweet potato casserole, and a can of jellied cranberry sauce for my Dad(🤣), he must have it!

  8. Kathleen says:

It would cause a riot here if mashed potatoes wasn’t on the menu!
God bless you as you work your way through the holidays without your dear husband. It’s just not the same but we are blessed to have our kids and grandchildren! Happy Thanksgiving!
    Kathleen

    • Oh Kathleen, how sweet of you…I count my blessings everyday for having my children and grands so close. I do miss the tablescape parties on Cuisine Kathleen! I send my blessings to you as well, so nice to hear from you, and thank you so much! You have made my day!

  9. It’s just the two of us in a small home,so it’s just a few Thanksgiving decorations and a simpler version of a traditional midwest dinner.

  10. Julie says:

    Hi Jenna,
You set such a pretty Thanksgiving table and so many awesome recipes. Thanks for the mention of the corn pudding muffins I made. I appreciate it and I will enjoy looking at your food and recipes.
Enjoy the rest of the week.
    Julie xo

  11. Believe it or not… The thing that says the holidays most to my boys is the relish tray! And we’ll have all the regular turkey day things too:@) Have fun planning!

  12. J says:

I don’t think your email subscribe works bc I’ve tried many times and it says that I just started following every time, but to no avail I never get any emails of yours. Could you please put my email address in, so I will get your emails? Thanks!

Have a fantastic week and weekend coming up Jenna!

  13. Cyndi Raines says:

Wow, Jenna, those recipes all sound wonderful! I’ll have to take some time to review them. My table is all set, but that’s it. Our recent snow storm has kicked my bottom, 10.5 inches, ugh. Had to plow out a few paths for our dog in the backyard as he is getting older and it was such a heavy snow, hard to get through it. Crazy that Thanksgiving is only 2 weeks away. We’ll probably join my
sister and her daughter, but will have all the traditional dishes and we love the leftovers. It makes all the work worth it, to have extra to nosh on for a day or so. Before I forget, I was inspired by your asparagus rice dish last night and while I didn’t have the special rice, I still stir fried the asparagus in lemon and butter with some onion and mushrooms and cut up 2 chicken breasts (already baked) and had a side of some Chinese rice and it was all very good. Thank you for helping me to experiment. Very tasty, but still want to try your original recipe. Have pinned it. 😋

    • Oh you poor thing, 10 inches! Winter is tough on pets {and their owners!} You’re so right, all the work is worth it when you have lots of yummy leftovers! I am so glad I inspired to to experiment and it sounds like you came up with a winning dinner!

  14. Jill Kuhn says:

Our turkey dinner will just be hubby, me and my MIL. But always fun to have the “traditional” foods on the table! I enjoyed hearing what recipes you like to serve, Jenna. ❤️

  15. Mary says:

So many yummy menu offerings Jenna! We’re still in the planning stage too and will have two Thanksgiving, one with my hubby’s family on Sunday. I’ll need to wear some stretchy pants 🙂
