Fearless Friday, Fantasy Owl

Happy Friday!

Fall is flying by…

I am having fun this month participating in the Doodlewash November Art Challenge

Drawing or painting something everyday from the prompt list

AND!

My 11 yr old grandson is doing it with me!!

We both had fun drawing owls and I want to share my process with you for this week’s Fearless Friday

This might look complicated at first, but when you break it down,

step by step and shape by shape

it becomes simple

Because my owl is symmetrical I opted to do him in pencil first so I could get the shapes right

When you’re drawing something symmetrical it helps if you turn your paper

this will help see it from a different perspective and help you get it equal

Once I was happy with the drawing I inked over it

with a waterproof .03 micron pen

I embellished the drawing as I went along with whatever designs popped into my head

When I had the basic shapes inked in I erased the pencil

I continued to embellish areas in a zentangle like style

Ok, now he’s ready for color

Using a watercolor brush pen I applied brown to the areas I wanted darkest on his wings

and then blended them out with a water brush pen

I continued to color in this fashion,

adding color and blending out

I also used colored pencils in some areas where I wanted solid color

and also for the background

Master’s Touch mixed media sketch book/Hobby Lobby

I highly recommend this mixed media sketch book, Master’s Touch from Hobby Lobby.  The paper is very thick and holds up well to watercolor and markers generally don’t bleed through, it’s very affordable at $6.99 for 60 pages and if you use the weekly 40% off coupon it’s really a bargain!

This fantasy owl flew over to Society 6 and landed on a few things too…

I highly recommend doing an art challenge

creating something from the daily prompts can take you out of your comfort zone

and make you try new subjects, techniques and improve your skills!

Be Fearless!!
