Fearless Friday, Tea Party

Let’s have a tea party today!

Pick out a pretty cup!

The photo below, from Amber @Follow the Yellow Brick Road, was my inspiration

It looks complicated, but one step at a time makes it doable

I started with a pencil sketch,

sketching the bottom cup first and then adding the rest of the cups

There was plenty of erasing and adjusting as I went along

The saucers were giving me fits,

but I decided I would ignore them for now

and do an ink outline on the cups

I have a love/hate relationship with watercolor brush pens,

sometimes they work great and others, not so much

I began doing the pattern on the top cup with watercolor brush pens

and quickly discovered they weren’t going to blend out the way I wanted

I returned to traditional watercolor

I use a combination of watercolor tubes and pan watercolors

Now I was getting the soft blends I wanted

I always keep a color chart handy for reference

The intricate flowers and pattern elements are merely suggested with a few strokes

Painting the design on the saucers helped get them to look better

I put gold dots on the bottom cup and saucer to fill out the pattern

and added shadows

I used a black fine liner pen for final details

“Tea Party” 5″ x 7″ watercolor and ink, on mixed media paper

  11. Sheryl says:

Beautiful – I love how you break apart things that look complicated, and make me realize that maybe I could actually draw something similar. I also enjoyed seeing how you shifted away from watercolor brush pens when they weren’t quite working without throwing the partially done picture away and starting over.

    • Thanks Sheryl, art always comes with lots of “happy accidents,” the challenge is to make them work for you! I really enjoyed doing these teacups, it was out of my comfort zone which is what I think made it fun…the hardest part was the basic drawing, getting the shapes right…I did a lot of erasing 🙂

  12. Carol S. says:

Your teacups turned out amazing!! I just love how you did this! The floral patterns you painted are so lovely. I have several teacups given to me by family. Some day I may try to paint them too. ❤️
