Take-out Tuesday, Diner Style Onion Burgers

I have to admit,

I am really not suffering during this time of social distancing…

First of all, I love to be at home doing my favorite things

Reading, writing, cooking, creating…

I also have a resident chef,

who has boundless energy and loves to cook!

He recently bought this gas griddle

On the weekends you’ll find him outside cooking breakfast

He has a handy dandy pancake batter dispenser

Hashbrowns, blueberry pancakes, bacon,

the griddle does it all

The other night he cooked onion burgers

You don’t need a professional griddle to make this,

you can do this in a skillet stove top

Put the patties on top of the onion rounds,

pushing down with a spatula so onions adhere to the meat

Let the onion burgers cook for 6-8 minutes

until the onions begin to turn golden and crispy around the edges

Carefully flip onion burgers and top with cheese

Cook an additional 2 minutes or until done to your liking

Some of the onions get charred and some stay soft

They all combine with the grilled meat to make quite a tasty burger!

DINER STYLE ONION BURGERS

Prep Time 10 minutes
Resting Time 30 minutes
Course Cook out, Main Course
Cuisine American
Servings -37

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion peeled, halved and thinly sliced
  • salt and pepper
  • 1/2-3/4 lb ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon butter plus additional butter for buns
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2 slices American cheese
  • 2 hamburger buns toasted or grilled

Instructions

  • Combine the onion slices and 1 teaspoon of salt in a bowl and toss to combine. Transfer the onions to a colander and let sit for 30 minutes, tossing occasionally. Transfer the onions to a clean dish towel, gather the edges together and squeeze out as much liquid as you can from the onions. Do this over the sink or a large bowl since the onions will have quite a bit of liquid in them.
  • Set heat to medium high on griddle or stove top. Drizzle griddle or skillet with butter and olive oil. Divide the onions into 2 separate rounds and place on hot griddle or skillet. Form the beef into 2 loosely packed patties. Place the patties on top of the onion rounds and push down with a spatula so the onion adheres to the beef. The patties should measure 4 inches in diameter. Season the beef generously with salt and pepper.
  • Cook for 6-8 minutes, until the onions turn a deep golden brown and begin to crisp around the edges. Flip the burgers, then increase the heat to high and cook until well browned on the second side, about 2 minutes.
  • Add 1 or 2 slices of cheese to each burger and allow to melt. Butter cut sides of buns and grill, buttered side down on griddle or skillet or toast. Place onion burgers on buns to serve. Add preferred condiments if desired.

These look so good!! I’m actually having burgers this week. I’ll have to try them this way with the onions. I love adding a dash of liquid smoke to the meat before cooking.

  10. These sound delish, Jenna. I might just have to try these.

I agree with you. I am enjoying the “unseasonable little to no snow in March” for Michigan and getting a jump start on major yard work, (burning a huge tree that came down late summer last year) so when the really nice spring weather comes I will enjoy working on the flower beds. The days of rain, I’m baking or cleaning inside. However, I’m the resident cook, ha. Those burgers look good and have me ready to fire up our grill. I really like that pancake batter dispenser too! 😄 Thankful for the blessings of a good home, yard work to keep us busy and food to prepare. Praying for our nation and thankful for good blogs like yours to keep us lighthearted and inspired. Thanks Jenna! 🥀🌾🐇

  12. Kitty says:

Oh man, Jenna, that onion burger looks so incredible! I’m going to try that. I love a juicy cheeseburger. You’re lucky to have your resident chef that loves to cook. I must say, that I’ve been quite busy here at home. Luckily the weather was nice and sunny and I even got some yard work done, besides cooking and baking. Take care, Jenna, and enjoy your time at home.
