Recipe Box, Home School Treats aka Pantry Candy Bars

Home School started at our house this week

I know many people are finding themselves in a new roll as a teacher

I am really proud of HHjr,

he is taking his new role very seriously…

I’m now calling him “the Principal”

He is tough!

2nd grade English lessons and alphabet practice are being done “Flintstone” style

writing with a stick in the sand

Math involves counting and grouping numbers using the driveway rocks

I am so proud and grateful for the dedicated teachers in our country

sending lesson plans and learning activities to the parents to keep the students learning

School at the beach is lots of fun!

Big E’s brother, Superboy is in 5th grade and he is writing essays,

typing them on my laptop and emailing them to his teacher

She has also set up a virtual classroom

where the students can interact and upload pictures and videos

With only a short snack break mid morning, they can get all their work done by noon

leaving the afternoon for free play and art

They are doing so well, I decided to make them an after school treat!

If you have a can of sweetened condensed milk and some flavored chips in your pantry

You can whip up a delightful sweet treat

This is a version of the classic 7 layer bars,

Instead of graham crackers,

I used an almost out of date bag of potato chips I found in the pantry

Snip the corner of the bag to release the air

and then crush them right in the bag

Melt butter in the microwave in a 9″ x 13″ dish

Spray the sides of the dish with cooking oil spray

Add the crushed chips, toss them around to coat

and pat into an even layer

I put the M & Ms in next,

they tend to crack during baking so this way the cracks won’t show

Add the chocolate and butterscotch chips {or any flavors you have}

Slowly pour the sweetened condensed milk over all and bake until set

This is how mine looked after 25 minutes,

set, but chocolate hadn’t melted enough so I put it back in the oven for 10 more minutes

Chill thoroughly before cutting into bars or squares

A sweet treat for any age!

  1. Jenna, this is so heartwarming to see this style of teaching. HHjr (aka The Principal) has taken to hands on teaching perfectly. Incorporating the great outdoors, keeps children’s attention and they are active, rather than sitting in a desk. I am so proud of my daughter-in-love, a high school math teacher, who is a wonderful teacher for our EM! This new normal of school can be very positive. Kudos to HHjr and oh the pantry candy bars look fabulous!

    • Thank you Pam, I am really proud of all of them, and it’s funny to watch my son “run a classroom” instead of a construction company! I know your DIL is loving time at home now with her precious girls… I am truly inspired by so many people who have quickly adjusted and are providing support and help to others…

  2. HH Jr. sounds like a gifted and natural born teacher. What a wonderful way to teach and to learn, too. I am glad they are well fortified on their school day activities!

  3. Sally Clem says:

What a great dad! What a sweet Gigi! What smart boys! I’ve been thinking of you all. Looks like things are going well there. I’m better. Still healing. Take care, y’all!

Home schooling definitely requires some creative thinking to keep the kids’ attention. The Principal appears to be doing just that and making if fun.

  6. Rita C. says:

Can I be vice principal so I can be fed and get treats? Yummo. Jenna.

Adorable post Jenna. Love the Flintstone style lessons and how fun for the grands to be housebound at the beach. I know your son enjoys his new role of teaching and spending this time with the kiddos. Love the treat recipe, who new this recipe would make such delicious goodies. Be happy y’all are there, it’s terrible back home. Publix shelves are not stocked! Take care sweet friend…….

    • Thank you Emily, I do feel guilty being able to enjoy the beach these days while so many are miserable…haven’t been to Publix yet, but Ryan has been to Rouse’s twice and was able to get everything we wanted. Is the curfew affecting you?

  8. lghiggins says:

So easy. This would make a fun homeschool project.

  9. Cyndi Raines says:

Love the beach school room ! Not only are they working their little brains, but getting great fresh air and lots of vitamin C. Those treats look so good, especially with the potato chip addition which brings on the sweet and salty taste which I love. I’m sure you will have lots of art work time for them also. How fun!

    • Thank you Cyndi, yes, they are loving school at the beach! I love sweet and salty too, the perfect combo! I am so glad they enjoy art, it’s a great way for them to have some quiet time after playing…

  10. How fun is the flint stone lessons and having the beach right there. It looks like the best home school ever. Being so creative and yet teaching the boys. The treats look wonderful. Something most of us can whip up easily. I am out of chips and eggs. I have ordered groceries online, but they did not have eggs. Trying times for us all. Take care and enjoy your family.

    • thank you Linda, I am hoping we can get some eggs to decorate and bake a cake with…so far the stores here have been pretty well stocked since tourist traffic is down. Watching the home schooling is a treat for me and I’m so proud of the job my son is doing 🙂

  11. Mary says:

“School at the beach is lots of fun!” …I bet those boys are in heaven! Love the ‘Flintstone-style’ writing in the sand 🙂 My sister is a teacher and she has been in Google Meets with her kids daily and had to actually scramble to pick and deliver materials for them when school was cancelled. Bet everyone loved those treats!

    • Bless our teachers, they are really working hard to keep the kids learning and in a routine…I am really enjoying watching my son come up with creative ways for teaching, thanks Mary
