Fearless Friday, Mailbox

I painted this door with a mailbox for World Watercolor Month,
for the daily prompt “texture”
This photo was my model
With the stone, old wood, metal mailbox and climbing ivy,
there was a lot of textures going on here
I sketched the location of the mailbox for a starting point
Then filled in around it
Once I had the composition and main areas sketched in,
I inked over the sketch with a Micron .01 waterproof pen
I began painting with a pointed filbert brush,
using the very tip,
dabbing green in several shades to establish the ivy
Then the door got some Leaf green washes
Quinacridone Rose washes next
Blue washes with Windsor & Newton cobalt
Raw Sienna washes on the walls
Next I painted washes on the door frame and street with Payne’s Gray,
dropping in a little Raw Sienna for a cast shadow
The mailbox was darkened with shades of Sepia
Then ink details and more darks to finish
“Mailbox” 6″ x 8″ watercolor and ink on 140 lb. cold pressed watercolor paper
Try drawing or painting a subject out of your comfort zone…
Have fun and Be Fearless!

Jenna, I love the door and mailbox. When we travel, I enjoy finding beautiful doors to photograph. They somehow intrigue me, maybe I am wondering about what goes on behind the closed doors. As always, Fearless Friday delights. Happy Friday, I am trying to stay indoors where it is cool!
Doors fascinate me too Pam, we went to San Miguelle de Allende Mexico once and every door is a piece of art, I took a zillion photos!
So beautiful! I want to walk through that door!
Thanks Dorothy 🙂
I like this one a lot – good job!
Thanks Charlotte!
Jenna, you have such a gift! Your painting is beautiful, and I adore its color palette. There is just something so pretty about a red door! Take care, and enjoy your day!
Thanks so much Shannon, I hope you have a lovely weekend 🙂
Oh, Jenna, this painting was so much fun to watch evolve! In fact, I waited a few minutes before scrolling down to the last frame, and in my mind was saying, “Wait for it…wait for it!” and voila! there was the finished product in all its beauty! I love the subject matter (doors are always intriguing, but one with so much character as this one is extra special!), then you border it with ivy and highlight a striking mailbox…..it doesn’t get much better. Bravo!
Rosie, thank you so much!! Your enthusiasm always gives me a boost and makes me smile!!
What timing! This is so cool. I’m taking a class at the Eastern Shore Art Center on sketching and watercolor journaling. A writer and page doodler, I’ve never painted before. I’m hoping something similar from Jane Sellier’s class. Then perhaps, take a turn with your wonderful step by step.
hi Alan! Is it an online class? I hope you love it and it gives you a nudge to paint…watercolor is a little challenging as it’s hard to control, but that’s part of the fun and excitement…you can try starting out with watercolor pencils to get a feel because you can add color with the pencils and then blend out the color with water and a brush. Great hearing from you, I miss our bloggy get togethers!
I digitally collect doors and your watercolor challenges any photo I have. I love it!
oh thank you, I am discovering that so many people are fascinated by doors, they look like they have a story to tell, don’t they?
A wonderful step by step and such a lovely painting! 😊💚
thank you Patty Anne!
Jenna, I love the door and mailbox. I am very fascinated with doors, and have taken many photos during my travels. Hope you having a nice weekend, We are having a heat wave in Central New York this summer, and it will be 94 tomorrow. A different summer for sure. Hope our future summers are a little cooler. 🙂
Thanks Deb, doors are fascinating, almost teasing that they have a story to tell! It seems everyone is having a heat wave right now…try to stay cool! 🍹
I like this a lot, Jenna. I’ve never seen a filbert brush. I need to check that one out!
It’s always fun to try something new!
Love your works
thank you!
Love your artistic rendering of your door and mailbox Jenna ♥
Thank you Mary, I love to paint interesting doorways!
Oh my goodness, I LOVE this! What a gorgeous watercolor painting – you are so talented!
Thank you Marie! Doors have always fascinated me!
This is so pretty! Of course I’m featuring it in this week’s Creative Compulsions.
