Today I am sharing a tabletop easel I made with a cardboard box
and cut up watercolor doodles
It’s lightweight and the perfect way to keep what you’re reading,
sketching, or cooking handy!
I don’t know how I ever lived without it!
It all started with a sturdy white box that came in the mail
I kept looking at the box thinking I needed to re-purpose it for something…
Hmmm….
That’s it!!
A tabletop easel was born
I glued the sides into position with a glue gun
I glued a small watercolor of a beach ball on the top slanted surface
and a line of flat backed glass vase beads forming a shelf
I cut up a page from a sketchbook that was covered with watercolor sea life
You can use photos or magazine pictures,
cut up wrapping paper or craft paper, anything you like!
Note: If using magazine photos, glue them on card stock and then cut them out so they will be sturdier than flimsy paper
I chose not to use Mod Podge because I wasn’t sure how the cardboard box would hold up to the moisture and I was afraid it would smudge the watercolor paintings
A crab and jellyfish went on the back
Then a sea turtle swam around the side with a seahorse
I added patterns to the triangular areas with markers
An octopus swam onto the other side
Sea shells joined the beach ball on the front
Silver dots were added with a marker to frame the easel surface
It’s the perfect size for a Kindle or E-reader
I added a few marker lines around the glued watercolors
to finish and fill in the white spaces
It’s perfect for a laptop pillow for comfortable, hands free reading
This comes in handy as a recipe holder while cooking too
AND!
It comes in very handy in my outdoor art corner on the porch
I can prop a photo of what I’m painting right next to my art easel for reference

Hi Jenna, I love how you think outside the box! 🙂 Your tabletop easel is such a fun and creative way to repurpose too. I have a small bean bag easel that I use to prop my kindle and iPad up when I’m reading but this is so much more creative. Happy Thursday ♥

What a great project, Jenna!!! I think that kids would have a fun time doing this, too. I love the shiny stones that hold the kindle or tablet. You idea is just so creative!

Jenna your phone and tablet holder is neat. Love how you have it decorated. I made a phone holder for myself and wished I would of made it large enough to hold my tablet as well. I guess it was an after thought. Thanks for sharing.

What a fun project and so adorable! I love all the summer decor and happy colors. Great tip on gluing magazine photos to card stock before using them. I never thought of that but it totally makes sense. Once again, it’s always a pleasure to hop with you! Enjoy the rest of your week!

I thought the same thing when I received two of those kind of boxes. Create something. So for one I painted it with chalk paint and tied raffia around it for a coastal vibe and used it for a riser for a lantern.

Great recycled craft 🙂 In the kitchen trying to read a recipe is where it would come in most handy for me. Love the artwork on it as well.
Thank you Rachelle, yes it’s perfect for that…I often snap a pic of a recipe on my phone rather than printing it out and just put my phone on the easel to reference while I’m cooking. I love our craft hop, everyone has so many great ideas!

Great idea! This reminds me— I want to create some sort of desk for our treadmill so I can walk (slowly!) and blog at the same time! If it works, I’ll be sure to share!
I like those types of boxes too, and save them to use for storing Christmas ornaments and such.

This is a great use for a box. As a (retired) teacher, I admit to a longstanding love affair with boxes (as long as you don’t metaphorically put kids in them and slap on a label). Boxes have such potential! I think the absolute best way to recycle is to repurpose. Your project is outstanding–both beautiful and useful!
Thanks Linda, I have a new appreciation for boxes now, and especially with on line shopping these days they rapidly pile up…the volume in use these days is worrisome, it’s so important we reuse and recycle as much as we can…
