Fearless Friday, Painting with Shapes

I am always preaching to break down subjects into simple shapes when drawing

Seeing Double

The cocktail above and the flower below

were first drawn by shape, then colored with marker

Dedicated Drawing

I decided to try the same drawing by shape technique with watercolor,

not sketching first but simply applying shapes

My inspiration photo was this oil painting by Donna Munsch

The drama of the lights and darks really appealed to me

Step 1: the lightest yellows

Step: 2, adding oranges

Step: 3, the lightest parts of the leaves and stem

Step 4:   Adding bright green

Step 5:  Darker greens

Next I began on the petals,

light washes of red and pink

Then more deeper reds and orange

And deeper reds are tucked in to finish

“Colorful Rose” 9″ x 12″ watercolor on 140 lb. cold pressed paper

Don’t be afraid to try something new and have fun!

Be Fearless!

  1. I am loving all of your watercolor paintings, Jenna. The rose is gorgeous! Happy Friday my friend.

  2. I’m always intrigued how you work from the middle out. I get the lights to darks but you have to be spot on with your distance perception to go as you do and I salute you!

    • Thanks Jeanie, I decided to just be fearless and see what happens, I love to paint free and loose, the paintings tend to turn out better than the ones I worry over 🙂

So pretty, and I love the colors!!! 😀 I use the paint by number technique a lot when I paint with oils.

  4. This is a fun post. Deconstructing a subject with your sight, I think is the most useful tool for artwork, and really hard for some people who think basically in two-dimensions. Loving the tutorial that shows the curves and depth of the rose, not just the surfaces. Great POST! Sandi

Love when you do step by step. It’s fun to see how the eye of an artist works at painting. Beautiful work Jenna……..Happy August.

Happy day to you my friend!

  11. Another lovely painting, Jenna! Of course I’m going to feature it in this week’s Creative Compulsions.
