Fearless Friday, Garden Gate
I have been painting watercolors daily for the past few months
Watercolor went from being my least favorite medium, to my new favorite!
But, I do enjoy acrylic, colored pencils, markers and pastels
so for August I’m going to use a variety of tools and techniques
I got some new sketch books to experiment with earlier this year
toned paper is great to use for pastels too
I also got this set of 48 colored pencils from Bruynzeel Designs
They come in this great storage box that has drawers to keep them organized
It’s a sleek look to keep your space uncluttered
I used this toned gray paper and Prismacolor colored pencils for Garden Gate
I used the Prismacolors because I totally forgot about the Bruynzeel Designs set~
I got it right before I went to the beach house to quarantine for 4 months!
After being gone for so long I am rediscovering and finding things I totally forgot about!
My inspiration photo is from Better Homes and Gardens
The first thing I did was establish the position of the gate doors and walls
I have a 6″ triangle ruler which is so handy for small drawings
These 3 lines, from left to right, are the wall, the right edge of the left door,
and then the left edge of the right door
Next I drew the left door detail with more straight lines and freehand curves
Then I did the right door,
making it smaller because in this open position it’s further away
I inked the sketch, drawing the finial details
and then the pencil was erased
I chose a very pale yellow green and a darker minty green to mimic the weathered paint on the gate
Then I brightened it with a warm beige
Next a warm yellow ochre was colored on the walls
and a darker brown for shadow areas
I used a medium green marker and a yellow green pencil
to indicate leaves on the tree inside the gate
and colored the sky in with a light blue and white
Foliage began to be added in front of the gate
a few flowers…
A tiled path was colored in with a light terra cotta pencil
leading to a touch of foliage just inside the gate
I added some more ink lines to make the flowers and leaves stand out more

I used Prismacolor colored pencils for this drawing, I have used Prismacolor pencils forever, I recommend you invest in quality pencils for the best results in color depth and blending

If you haven’t tried colored pencils, get a set and give them a try
It’s kind of like grown up coloring,
you have a lot of control and you can vary the look by pressure and strokes
They mix wonderfully with watercolor and markers too

You never cease to inspire me. This is so beautiful! Your choice of a subject is perfect and of course your end project is perfect, too! I might be more willing to try this with pencils than some of your painting projects! Seems a little less scary!

As always, I love to watch your creation process, step-by-step! Your garden gates are beautiful! During the quarantine I found the relaxation and joy of “adult coloring books”! I invested in a set of Prismacolor pencils and love their colors and soft cores that make coloring so much fun. It truly is a stress-reducer during these emotionally difficult times. Nice, Jenna. I don’t use my colored pencils nearly as much as I should, though I’ll often do my preliminary watercolor sketch in either a pale gray or the color family I’m planning to use. This image is so inviting.
Thank you Jeanie, I like to use pencils when I’m not in a rush since they do take longer than other mediums, but I find them comforting and relaxing since you have total control…unlike watercolor when you never know what could happen! 😂
Beautiful gate, both the inspiration and your drawing. Let me know what you think about the Bruynzeel Design colored pencils. I almost always use Prismacolor because Dori says they are the best, but I also like Caran dAche.
I do not need to be encouraged to buy any more art supplies!!! ;P

I love gates and doors. This project looks so fun. I wonder if you ever get so caught up in the art that you forget to take pictures?
