Fearless Friday, A Trip to France
Since most of us are traveling virtually these days
I’ve been collecting photos of interesting cafes and cityscapes
I have developed a passion for Urban Sketching,
drawing loosely with ink and watercolor
Capturing part of a scene or street
For today’s painting, we’re going to take “A trip to France”
I began with a pencil sketch and did use a small ruler
to make sure I got the lines drawn correctly
Note: If you don’t want to free hand your subject you can trace it and then transfer it to another piece of paper, using a piece of carbon paper
I inked the pencil lines with a waterproof fine liner pen
and erased all the pencil except for the light lines
indicating the balcony shadow, which would add drama at the end
I started painting with a light wash of Cobalt Blue
New Gamboge was used on the wine shop sign
A light wash of Sap Green went on the window and darker Sap for the wine bottles
I used a red wash on some of the signs and shades of brown on the roof tiles
A light green/brown wash went on the shutters and other shop
Then I began darkening areas and building up color
Several shades of Yellow Ochre went on the walls
I turned the space over the doorway into a window and added deeper darks
I indicated what was beyond the door with orange
To finish, I added the balcony shadow spilling over the doorway and beyond
“A Trip to France” 7″ x 10″ watercolor and ink on mixed media paper
This painting was inspired by a painting I found here
Urban sketching is a wonderful way to travel right now,
drawing and painting are also a great way to relax and escape!

The shadow from the balcony – it makes it “real” in its way. And not muddy, which sometimes that can be. Beautiful in every way. I love sketching/painting from my photos. It brings back the memory!
